What does GET DOWN mean?

GET DOWN can be understood on several levels. It describes a movement towards the ground — lowering, shifting weight, touching the floor. In dance, the ground is not just a surface, but a partner: something that supports us, gives resistance and makes movement possible.

In Hip-Hop and Street Dance, “get down” also means to get into the music, dance, express yourself and be present — to come down into the body, into the moment, onto the ground.

There is a paradox at its core: GET DOWN — to get back up. Falling, letting go, surrendering to gravity and losing contact with the ground can become the starting point for something new.

GET DOWN: A reason to stand up again.

GET DOWN RITUAL is therefore not only a movement, but an attitude: ground yourself to move, fall to rise, and return to the ground to find a new starting point

GET DOWN RITUAL 2026 was the first edition of a new dance festival that brings together urban dance, contemporary movement practices, circle culture, community, art and nature. As a pilot project, we explored how this dance festival could function as a shared ritual of coming together — not merely as a competition, but as a space for cooking, singing, exchange, learning and unlearning, connection, and collective celebration. Held from July 24 to 26, 2026, the event was a resounding success, made possible by the collaboration between kopfstand e.V. and Kassel’s independent urban dance scene. Despite a limited budget (with funding from the Kassel Cultural Office and the Sparkasse Hessen-Thüringen Foundation) and a preparation period of just under two and a half months, many aspects of this first edition worked remarkably well, allowing us to gain valuable insights for a potential future continuation. HOPE!

LIMINAL explores the in-between spaces in a world undergoing change, creating a choreography that makes the space between „no longer“ and „not yet quite“ tangible as „never going back.“ Combining elements of urban dance, circus arts, and contemporary dance, the dancers weave together personal and collective experience. In doing so, choreographer Coşkun Kenar draws on a model by the ethnologist Victor Turner, who describes the transition of an individual from one society or culture to another in three steps: separation, liminal phase, and reintegration.
