“America has tried to raise generations of warriors to be on the front lines of American imperialism… So what we have done is raise two or three generations of men in America who don’t know how to be human.”

The real crisis for men is capitalism: a conversation with Mark Anthony Neal and @maximillian.alvarez of @therealnewsnetwork

There’s something especially meaningful about having a book I wrote for my people be recognized in this way. I’m so grateful to the nominating committee, and truly honored to be included alongside such incredible authors.

My book, Making a Killing: Capitalism, Cops, and the War on Black Life (Henry Holt/ Macmillan) is coming out in January but today the press is sharing the cover. The brilliant artist Cameron Rowland graciously allowed me to use their recent piece, "exigent circumstances” (2026) which is a hydraulic battering ram (hydra-ram) police use to forcibly open locked doors. The work is accompanied by the following caption:
“Law enforcement do not need a warrant to enter any premises.

Warrantless, no-knock raids are legally permitted under ‘exigent circumstances.’ Officers may determine any circumstances to be exigent at their discretion.

Hydraulic battering rams allow an individual officer to forcibly open any locked door.”

The image perfectly captures one of the book’s central arguments: that policing has always been an essential element of capitalism, esp. control over property—whether it is protecting propertied classes, facilitating gentrification, patrolling the borders of nations or segregated neighborhoods, managing the unhoused, overseeing evictions, and so forth. And for the families I write about who lost loved ones to state and extralegal violence, their stories amount to an intergenerational search for “home,” for safety, but are relegated to neighborhoods subject to organized abandonment under police occupation.

Most of the book is about Movements resisting police violence, which I show are class struggles, but I also argue that policing has become a lucrative source of private investment—tech companies, weapons manufacturers, and so forth, are literally making a killing. The hydra-ram is not just a tool but a commodity enriching private capital with public funds.
So I hope you'll check out my book

In #MakingAKilling, historian Robin D. G. Kelley examines the deep history of law enforcement and racial justice in America—drawing a direct line from modern police fatalities to the economic and political structures that have shaped the nation.

Tracing the intersection of law enforcement, policy, and economic inequality—from housing segregation and predatory lending to border militarization—Kelley offers a comprehensive account of how state power and wealth accumulation have long been intertwined.

At the same time, Making a Killing chronicles the long tradition of Black civil rights resistance, highlighting the movements, leaders, and ideas that have pushed for systemic reform and broader social change throughout American history.

Out January 19, 2027.

My mother's family is from Baltimore, and I've always considered Charm City a second home. Excited to bring #SaveASeatForMe to the @baltimorebookfestival, and especially to be in conversation with one of my fave thinkers, the Brilliant @jessicamariejohnson_. Many thanks to the good folk at @redemmas for the invitation.

Something old and something new.
@neibabooks gave me an amazing opportunity this week to travel up to Boston for a few special things. On a dinner with my @nortonyoungreaders fam, including the beloved @susansmtan, I got to check out an old mural that I did with @calebneelonart way back when . . . After a brief cameo in @knivesout (first one), it’s still holding up! Caleb says it’s old enough to have a driver’s license now and I’ll take his word for it. The next morning, I had the incredible gift of sharing my newest book, INVISIBLE CROWN, with booksellers from all over New England 😬🙃. I’m beyond excited about this one, and more to come- it’s out in February. But I got to share the stage with @cathygjohn, @janaemarksbooks, and @jasminepics, which was a gift unto itself. Thank you @nortonyoungreaders for letting these books shine. I know how lucky I am.

WORD UP.
What an incredible festival. The only transactions were those of ideas, arts, songs, and stories. Community based organizations abounded. @nypl gave copies of everyone’s books to everyone. @sugarhillmuseum hosted in their beautiful space and there were free back-to-school supplies for anyone who needed them. I got to see my beloved @soniadls play both the guitar and the kazoo. I saw @laborofloaf and her beautiful book event filled the space with the smell of fresh baked bread. I finally got to meet @megmedinabooks and @sayantanidasguptabooks whose new books are 🤩🤩🤩. We made crowns. @emilysunli and @emelineleebooks shared from their gorgeous collaborations. The only thing missing was @armyvetfive because of the extreme ⛈️that day. @wordupbooks, no notes. Just hope to see you again next year. ❤️❤️❤️

"If you are a Black father and you're already framed as danger, you're already framed as something that's capable of violence, how do you find a way to navigate these situations when you are both threatened and seen as a threat?"
