One of the things that makes Taos so special is its history, and Hotel La Fonda is right in the heart of it. Located on the historic Taos Plaza, you’re steps away from local shops, restaurants, and everything that gives this town its character.

Thinking about moving to Taos? This is the kind of small-town charm that makes it easy to see the appeal.

Thin Moon, Small Window

🌚🌙

Spotted tonight’s waxing crescent while making dinner and scrambled the camera to try to get something from the back porch.

As it slipped through two windows in the clouds, my window to shoot was just as narrow. A moon approx 4% illuminated, just a couple of days past new, doesn’t stay up long, and the light disappears even faster. I started at 7:08pm and kept checking as I plated until the ridge finally took it. 📸

This shoot wasn’t planned, but the fading light and clouds were pretty so I gave it a go. It was a fun test of whether the gear on hand and my diminished faculties could hold up on the fly. First handheld with the 200mm at f/2.8, I could still shoot at 1/100 sec and ISO 2000. By 800mm, I was down to 1/6 sec, with the tripod doing the heavy lifting. But that only solves part of the problem: the moon keeps moving, and at that focal length, a slower shutter can turn fine detail soft.✨

Photographers measure light in stops, and each stop either doubles or halves the light reaching the sensor. Zooming from f/2.8 to f/8 narrows the lens opening, costing three stops, so only about an eighth as much light reaches the sensor at the same shutter speed. You can make up for that with a slower shutter or a higher ISO. The slower shutter risks motion blur from the moon itself, while a higher ISO adds noise.

It’s fun to wing it sometimes to find out what you can pull off in a pinch with what’s within reach. I’m always happy I tried even if the result doesn’t meet what I’d ideally want. 🔭 The last frame in the carousel was shot with my phone when I first noticed the moon setting.

I’ve been adventuring! 🌲⛰️

Back in September, I took a dream road trip from DFW to Caprock Canyon, Taos, Great Sand Dunes, and Rocky Mountain National Park. It was beautiful.

I spent two weeks living at Moraine Park in Rocky Mtn as the resident artist—and I honestly had the best view in the entire park.

After that, I went home for 11 days before heading east, this time to Shenandoah National Park. It has been the absolute best, most beautiful autumn for me. I’ll be in SHEN for two more weeks, soaking in all the vibrant fall colors. 🍂🍁

I will say... it’s actually harder for me to hike in Shenandoah than in Rocky Mountain! There’s something psychologically difficult about hiking down first, and then UP—which is about 90% of the hikes here. 😅 These mountains might not be as tall as their younger cousins out west, but they are STEEP!

Still, it is beyond amazing and I am so grateful to be here.

I would never be able to do this without the support of my family, especially my husband. He holds down the home front—including caring for Weasel and Grau—while I faff about being a landscape artist. Knowing Tim has my back (and is praying every day that I don't startle a bear, step on a snake, or drive off the edge of the road) gives me the courage to sally forth each day into a new adventure.

I have tons of beautiful threadpaintings planned in my head and will have at least a full year’s worth of work to do when I return home! 🧵🎨
