Until 24 October 2026, from 11 am to 6 pm, HEAVEN IS OURS / O CÉU É NOSSO fills the Arsenale’s Sala d’Armi E (first floor) with the culture of the “baloeiros”.
In the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, these communities spend months crafting enormous, hand-painted hot air balloons, transforming them into objects of profound emotional and ritual significance.

At the 70th International Festival of Contemporary Music “A Child of Sound”, the installation – curated by @sisselmorell and @fiefdrano – brings this marginalised practice into dialogue with a polyphonic soundscape by @djandersondoparaiso, whose music draws on funk mineiro, a culture rooted in the favelas and shaped by criminalisation and state repression.

Together, balloons and music celebrate the power of collective creation and reclaim the sky as a space for shared imagination and freedom.

Look up! 🎈Last night, at the Isolotto of the Arsenale, the culture of Brazil’s “baloeiros” found its way into the skies of Venice! At sunset, a monumental balloon, handcrafted and painted especially for the occasion, was slowly inflated and launched, transforming the Arsenale into a space for celebration and shared expression. In HEAVEN IS OURS / O CÉU É NOSSO, curated by @sisselmorell and @fiefdrano, the launch became a powerful expression of a living tradition in which voices, bodies and imaginations converged. Far more than objects in flight, these balloons embody a collective art form and a powerful act of cultural resistance.

With a balloon drifting into the fading light of dusk, the opening ceremony of the 70th International Festival of Contemporary Music “A Child of Sound” came to a close, connecting Venice and Brazil through a shared experience of art and cultural memory.
