🌪️ IT’S HERE! 🌪️

I’m so excited to announce the release of my newest composition, Tornado Alley, now available through Tapspace! 🎶

This piece has been such a fun project to bring to life, combining steel pan, marimba, groove, extended techniques, and a little bit of controlled chaos. 😈

A huge thank you to everyone who helped bring this piece from an idea on the page to a published work. I’m so excited to finally share it with the percussion community! Special thanks to Derek Johnson! I couldn’t have asked for a better collaborator, and I’m so excited that we get to share the finished recording with everyone! 🎥✨

Tornado Alley is now available from Tapspace. Check it out and grab a copy! Link in bio! 📄

Still on a high from last night after winning 2 Emmy Awards! I won for ‘Music Composition’ and ‘Audio Recording, Mixing and Design’ with Samuel Friend.
In all, my piece “Pale Blue Dot” received 4 nominations!

So many amazingly talented people helped bring this music to life. Michael Tushaus and Digisphere productions, my amazing wife Angela Chan, incredible musicians Jeffery Crowell, De Ann Letourneau, James Harvey, Rob Taylor, Dena Massaro, Tyler Williams; an amazing film crew, Tim Harbour, Omar Gomez, Maximus Kehayov, William Wiersma, Kelly Schwarze, and recording engineer Samuel Friend. Thank you so much to @eatmoreartvegas for premiering the video! I’m so lucky to have such talented friends!

Huge thanks to my publisher Tapspace, and to Majestic, Sabian, innovative percussion, and Remo for the instruments!

This project is supported in part by the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Link to the video performance is in my bio!

Tag a battery arranger who needs this! 💻 What feels “natural” to quad drummers can be a mystery to non-quad drummers. We created the “strong and weak crossovers” framework because we know it’s marching band arranging season. Let us know what you think in the comments below 👇

—

STRONG CROSSOVERS
are accented notes
→ Quad drummers prefer these on the right hand

WEAK CROSSOVERS
are non-accented notes
→ Quad drummers prefer these on the left hand

This is not a law or a rule, but a guideline for writing and tweaking tenor parts. Next time you open Sibelius, MuseScore or Dorico, comb through the parts you’re writing and see if you want to make updates.

Please note that there are also plenty of exceptions to this framework. Most commonly:

1️⃣ Extended scrape patterns will include plenty of strong left hand crossovers.

2️⃣ Big double stops where sometimes the right, sometimes the left hand is the overhand. This can look particularly cool and visually appealing 😎
