This was an interesting (if disturbing) old site in Cork City Centre - the original Cork City Gaol (Jail). It was considered to be state of the art in its day, but don’t mistaken that for a place of humanity in rehabilitation. Besides murderers and other criminals, it was also jail to children as young as 9 or 10 years old, caught stealing bread to eat, and other surprising inmates. Depending upon one’s social status or sentence, your punishments could include daily work, or torture or both (yes even the children).

Kind of a creepy place, but the honest transparency in the historical account of what it was like in those times is good for all to realize. They do a good job of story telling and keeping it honest in an entertaining way, appropriately educational visiting school groups.

It seems very random but the second floor of this old jail is a radio museum; it was apparently a radio station after it was no longer a jail! There was an important broadcast by JFK made from this station. The microphone of that broadcast is preserved as an important historical relic here.

Quite a strange juxtaposition in this historic building!

Another catch up post… my girl and I checked out Trim Castle in Boyne Valley - the tour guide was excellent! This is apparently the largest, best preserved and most impressive Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland. Like all these old sites it has a rich history of home to kings and queens, constantly under siege and generations of construction with improvements over the centuries that are apparent when pointed out by a knowledgable guide.

You may recognize one particular structure here that was a key site in Braveheart with Mel Gibson. They are particularly proud of this! Apparently, parts of the 1980 movie Big Red One with Mark Hamil and Lee Marvin was also shot here (for all you Gen Xers that may remember that film?)

This site is near the Hill of Tara and other fascinating sites. I will be returning to Boyne Valley on a future trip to see more of it!
