Blast overpressure isn’t always visible.
Sometimes, the first signs are the symptoms that are easiest to dismiss.

According to the 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 (𝐓𝐁𝐈𝐂𝐨𝐄), the following symptoms have been reported after 𝐥𝐨𝐰-𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞:
• Headaches
• Dizziness
• Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
• Difficulty hearing
• Trouble concentrating
• Memory problems
• Slowed thinking or reaction time
• Irritability
• Sleep problems
• Fatigue

These symptoms are not unique to blast exposure and can have many causes. They also do not necessarily mean someone has sustained a traumatic brain injury.

However, recognizing them and reporting persistent symptoms to a healthcare provider is an important part of protecting brain health and preserving readiness.

For many Special Operations Forces personnel, blast exposure isn’t a single event. It can be an occupational reality built over years of training and operations.

The more we understand these symptoms, the better equipped we are to recognize them, document them, and continue advancing the science that supports our warfighters.
