“I challenge the idea that a disability is an inherent negative and that people with disabilities are not capable of living full and rich lives.” -Cooper Salmon The eyes are a symphony of motion, interpreting the waves of light into meaning and perspective for not only the beholder, but the creator as well. This relationship between the eyes and interpretation plays a pivotal role in the work of painter Cooper Salmon, who’s cartoonish portrayal of everyday life explores the emotional, political, and physical experience of living with a degenerative eye disease. Featured: 2020 Issue 12.4, “Profiles,” Rayos Magos, @rayos_magos Join Rayos for the opening of his solo exhibition, entitled “RECUERDOS y RAICES (Memories and Roots)” in San Jose @sjccart incredible Carmen Castellano Gallery, which runs from Aug 21-Sep26 On view: Aug 21 - Sep 26 Opening reception: Saturday, August 23, 2025, 1 - 4p 2100 Moorpark Ave, San Jose @sjccart “Recuerdos y Raices (Memory and Roots)” is a solo exhibition by mixed media artist Rayos Magos. The show investigates personal stories via memory, photos, photo references, and Chicano and Mesoamerican symbolism. The body of work each made within the past two years demonstrates Magos’s capacity to work in various media, ranging from painting, textiles, fiber, printmaking, and mixed media. This new body of textile work is a continuation of textile/fabric hung to resemble codices from Mesoamerica. Working in this way allows Magos to tell a story about his personal past. The role of scrolls in Mesoamerica was used to read into the future and document the past. Scrolls guide people on how they should live their lives in accordance with their spiritual lives. In the same way, Magos looks to his ancestors and learns from their choices to move forward. _______ Read more about Rayos: https://bit.ly/124RayosMagos (Link in Profile) Article in Issue 12.4, “Profiles” Written by Taran Escobar-Ausman, @taran_ea Photography by Daniel Garcia, @thecultivator #rayosmagos #sanjosecitycollege #recuerdosyraices #ChicanoArt #MesoamericanArt #TextileArt #MixedMediaArt #LatinxArt #BayAreaArt #SanJoseArt #ArtExhibition #ContemporaryArt #ArtistSpotlight #CulturalHeritage #VisualStorytelling

San Jose @knowfuturegallery “Historian Lewis Mumford famously stated, “The timelessness of art is its capacity to represent the transformation of endless becoming into being.” History is a testament to the people, families, towns, cities, and society that are constantly changing and evolving. Art of a specific time period can bring into focus the spirit of the era, capturing a time of transformation, and revealing a guiding principle of the past. For illustrator and graffiti artist RC, art can illuminate the zeitgeist of an era by utilizing the seemingly ordinary objects that populate people’s everyday lives. More importantly, creating art connects RC to his family, who have played an integral part in San Francisco Bay Area history.” _______________ Read more about RC: bit.ly/RChasapen163 (Link in Profile) Written by Taran Escobar-Ausman, @taran_ea Photography by Marietta Asemwota, @ettamedia
