Entwining a love of place, plants and people in The Tasty sweaty north. Larrakia / Dalabon /Tiwi country 💚@coloursofcountry [email protected]

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

So many beautiful naturally made inks and prints.

I have shared these simple techniques @darwincommunityarts with candlelight creatives to quietly document the seasons. This is a wonderful program for those with disabilities and neurodivergent minds. This lovely technique is very therapeutic!

I have continued to do so at home with young friends as the cycads sprout.

All the inks are made from local plants in my kitchen or campfire and prints from the bush or garden here at Humpty Doo.

It’s been a while between posts.

In the in-between, I recently submitted my PhD — a project grounded in entangled collaboration on and with my home, Larrakia Country. The final section of the thesis turned toward Rapid Creek - Gurambai, following the tidal, relational, more-than-human connections that shape this place.

So it feels quietly significant to now find myself working alongside the team at Landcare NT on the Creeek Connections program, helping design public programs that move through and with these creek systems across Larrakia Country — Ludmilla Creek, Mitchell Creek, Sandy Creek and Rapid Creek - Gurambai.

The program brings together a whole range of ways to gather with waterways: walking, listening, learning, making, noticing, caring. Small acts of attention and connection across tidal creek ecologies that hold so much story, memory and life. Working with amazing facilitators.

I’m especially excited to be collaborating with my friend Kuya James to host a Deep Listening event on Sunday 17 May. Tickets are only $5 and I have a feeling it’s going to be something pretty special.

You can check out the full program at the link in bio.

INTRODUCING OUR SPEAKERS

--- Dinner from the Debris ---
- Edible survival tips for a Cyclone with Emma Lupin -
Sunday 30th November | 11am - 1pm

Forget the baked beans — it’s time to get creative!

Join us for an information and interactive session on turning disaster into delicious and debris into dinner. We’ll explore inventive ways to stay nourished (and even inspired) during and after a cyclone, including:

• Building food-sharing networks before disaster strikes
• Packing an inspired (and edible!) cyclone kit
• Growing living food that won’t blow away
• Foraging and cooking with “windfall” produce
• Fridge-diving, flavour-hunting, and a hint of cane toad cookery

Bring along one or two edible items from your own cyclone kit — and why they make the cut. Let’s turn disaster into delicious, and survival into an art form.

-------

Creating Climate Refuge is a weekend of free introductory disaster preparedness workshops open to all community members to attend. Come and learn, upskill and share information to help one another live through the increasing severity of disasters occuring in our tropical urban environment.

Every person who prepares is one less person panicking in crisis! And we are most resilient when we plan together.

Creating Climate Refuge is a Darwin Community Arts’ program funded through the City of Darwin Environment Grant program. It aims to grow the amount of individuals and networks actively informed and able to respond during natural disaster/climate catastrophe events. Darwin Community Art mission statement is No art on a dead planet. This program is the start of us working within the creative recovery space to provide what we can to boost local disaster resilience.

Hope to see you there!

A few photos from the Introduction to tropical plant dyes workshop that I ran at @lakesidecommunity_garden recently.

It was a wonderful morning with such a diverse and interested group of participants and sharing some research findings and creative practice.

There were many on the wait list, so i hope to host another soon. Please pm if you or your organisation is interested in future workshops.

Thanks for having me. Also look out for other nature based workshops at the garden.
