When we visited the Gabra people of northern Kenya, the children asked us for one thing: books. They have no libraries in the whole Chalbi Desert region. None. While schools make a valiant effort to teach languages, most children are not proficient in English or Swahili, the most widely used national languages of their country. Without books, their future opportunities are limited. And they know it.

We've seen the same thing in other remote areas from the Ecuadorian Amazon to remote villages in Cambodia and Nepal. In some areas the children need books in trade languages like English and French. In other areas, the community desperately wants books in their mother tongue. ALL these languages need to be supported for thriving, and one of the best ways to do so is with books.

That's why we've launched the Story Tree Literacy Project.

Our goal is simple but ambitious: help children become multilingual by putting physical books into their hands in both their mother tongue and the languages that expand educational and economic opportunity. If we can overcome the barriers to creating access to books in Kenya, we can offer the project to similar communities worldwide. We want to offer a blueprint for communities to follow.

First, Kenya. But...

Those who know me know that I'm a mental health researcher and explorer, not a librarian. To help these children get books, I need your help.

We're seeking:
📚 Publishers, especially African, that can help us source books
📖 Volunteer librarians to oversee the effort
🚚 Logistics experts to help us get books to the remote areas
🤝 Sponsors to defray the start up costs

If you've ever wondered how your expertise could make a lasting difference, this may be your opportunity.

Together, we can help preserve Indigenous languages while expanding possibilities for the next generation.

🌎 The Arctic is changing.

❄️ The people who have called it home for generations know something the rest of the world needs to hear.

This September, The Human Resilience Project heads to Nome, Alaska, to learn from the Iñupiat community about resilience in a rapidly changing climate.

We're not going to teach.

We're going to listen.

Together, we'll document the knowledge, traditions, and relationships that help communities remain strong even as permafrost melts and coastlines shift.

Every expedition reminds us that resilience isn't just about surviving.

It's about culture.
It's about community.
It's about hope.

📍Third expedition of our 10-country global study.

One of the best things that I get to do is involve #children in #citizenscience. And sometimes, the rewards are not what one expects. The Explorers Log recently featured The Human Resilience Project's expedition to Aotearoa (#NewZealand) in both the flag and Rolex watch sections -- and included a photo of our team's most important supporters, the Fifita family children.

A key principle of our investigations is including children in whatever ways are appropriate and meaningful. In #Kenya, we were able to sponsor three children to go to school, through the Northern Kenya Fund -- and now have a young man in teacher's college, a first year high school student, and a fifth grader, each in boarding school. In New Zealand, we included children in our excursions to get b-roll and stills of the environment, allowing them to engage in the investigation with us.

There are numerous ways to make #exploration meaningful not only in the results, but in the relationships built and young minds engaged.

After breakthrough Explorers Club flag expeditions in Kenya and New Zealand in 2025, The Human Resilience Project is scaling up.

2026: Four expeditions. Four continents. One urgent mission.

📍 Indonesia — Protecting orangutan habitats with Batak communities
📍 Alaska — Arctic transformation with Iñupiaq peoples
📍 Israel — Desert agriculture innovation amid conflict
📍 Paraguay — Guaraní land defense

We're racing against time to document resilience strategies before they disappear. As communities worldwide face climate change and displacement, this knowledge has never been more critical.

Join us. The window is narrow.

I am so proud that the first expedition (of ten) fielded by @TheHumanResilienceProject was featured in the "Explorers Journal." You can likely get a copy of this investigation into the resilience practices of the Gabra of Northern Kenya from your local library. Ask a librarian. I'm honored to have taken Explorers Club Flag 12 and a Rolex watch on this expedition.

You can also read the article on The Human Resilience Project's home page: https://thrproject.com/

Back home from the Jamboree!

What a profoundly healing time.

A few highlights:
My set on Friday night (technically Saturday morning) transitioned from an hour of me and Charley sharing songs to about 90 minutes of sharing a chant service. It was deeply moving to be in some of the softest hours of the day in heart space and song. We went deep and through the body into the holy. Wow! Plus, so freeking sweet to play with my beloved.

I had the pleasure of witnessing Charley, my love, be an incredible Assistant Stage Manager! Some gifts were called to the front. Beauty!

I saw and heard the incomparable @joliehollandmusic! Jolie’s music brought such medicine to my younger self. It felt like a kind of retrieving to be wrapped in her voice and songs again in this moment of this life. Particularly because of how much this land, this festival means to me. Still in feeling, not so much with word yet but feel naming it might point you to her music if you don’t already know it.

I held some circles, and they were so dropped in. It’s always a pleasure to hear and hold folks and to be heard and held. A lot of wisdoms were gleaned and woven into my heart of inquiry. Resonance was experienced. Seeds of friendship were uncovered, fortified, nurtured.

Everything was held so carefully and with such care in regards to Covid. Definitely still risky to gather. And, we did a pretty great job honoring the reality of this time and each other’s needs. The folks behind the scenes sure did a shit ton of work to support a culture of continued awareness and safety. So grateful.

And,
We laughed so hard and took such delight in giving each other temporary “knuck tats”! One person writes one word on one hand, and without looking at the first another person writes another word on the other hand, then it’s revealed to all. We were so delighted and maybe even in awe of how, even with folks we didn’t know, the words were so dead on to something.
You can share in our game by scrolling through the slides. Beware, you might get roped into my “Deep Kvlt” …. We do things like write on each other’s hands…

More soon!
