🎨🏙️ Tate Modern, London @tate

“Oh, what a most peculiar and fascinating gallery this is! 🌀✨
The walls hum with imagination — colours, shapes, and whispers of dreams all mingling together.
The rooms feeling quite small and quite curious, as if each painting were a secret doorway to another Wonderland.” 🎭🌈

Yeah I’m not over this really. And why would I be? Winning the @thediversebookawards Readers choice for Grandmas Locs was a wonderful surprise!

I didn’t get it together to prepare a speech which meant I garbled excitedly and in my flustering forgot to shout out the most important person in this my fabulous illustrator @thecamillaru I hope I’m making up for it here. Thanks @cheriselbaker for capturing my on stage idiocy and thanks, dear readers, for your votes. You made this grandma very happy!

Creative Team:

• Author: Cécile Bergame
• Illustrator: Magali Attiogbé

📚 Check it out from your local public library!

We love stories that move to a beat—books filled with rhythm, joy, and imagination. Roll Roll Little Pea is a perfect example of how words and pictures can groove together. Stay tuned for more playful, melodic stories coming your way!

History of The Story Time Band

What began in 2013 as a small Musical Story Time at Berkeley’s Claremont Branch Library has grown into a beloved citywide phenomenon. Founded by children’s librarian Michael Kwende (aka Mr. Michael) and retired librarian/guitarist Tim DeWolf, the band includes library specialists/musicians Juan Castille, Donovan Russell, and longtime Berkeley resident/keyboardist Tienne Lee.

The Story Time Band brings stories to life through music, movement, and fun. From packed weekly shows at City of Berkeley parks to performances at The Freight, the Bay Area Book Festival, Oakland’s Fairyland, and even San Quentin State Prison’s Family Day, the band delights hundreds of children and caregivers across Berkeley and beyond.

With a vibrant mix of storytelling, live music, and community connection, The Story Time Band is redefining family entertainment—one joyful jam at a time.

Since 2024, the band’s colorful visual identity has been brought to life by artist Jerome Lu (@jromonkey / @hyperactivemonkey), whose artwork perfectly captures the band’s spirit and playful energy.

Second week of Nigerian Modernism @tate modern. Beyond proud to have been able to curate the show alongside @oseibonsu_ ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

Some highlights here from the show including incredible works by Uche Okeke, Jimo Akolo, Yusuf Grillo and Ben Enwonwu.

Was also able to write a piece for the exhibition catalogue that we produced on Nigerian artists that utilised Islamic iconography, such as Uche Okeke’s Jumaa 1961, and the cross religious and ethnic solidarity between artists of the Zaria School and beyond. Thank you @tatepublishing @vampirefriendly @emmapoulter83

Amazing to be able to spend time with the artists present: Baba Bruce Onobrakpeya, Mama Nike Davies- Okundaye, Chief Jimoh Buraimoh, Chief Muraina Oleyami, Ndidi Dike, El Anatsui and Olu Oguibe. @bruce_onobrakpeya @nikeartgallery @elanatsui.art &&&

I wanted the paintings in the book to be different from my illustrations, so I had to find a different way of working. It was really challenging at first, but I soon let go and had fun with it. I did tons of experimenting and playing around. Painting with my daughter helped a lot, children paint so instinctively, they just do what feels good. Imagine that!!

Mum’s colourful jungle paintings are one of my fave things about the book..I literally want to fill my own house with them!

I couldn’t do this without giving her a mention. She’s absolutely the main reason this book exists!!
I never really considered myself as a writer before this, but someone told me to write about something I know well. Our adventures together were perfect writing material! Having kids is great for writing kids books… as long as you can cope with writing or drawing while they’re asleep!
