Develop a regular system and use it to conduct a transceiver function check every trip prior to entering the backcountry. Assemble your probe and shovel before every trip to ensure everything is working and in order. Each season deploy and repack your airbag according to the manufacturer’s recommendation to verify it is functioning properly.

Two days. Dozens of curious eighth graders. A classroom unlike any other.

Students from South Lake Tahoe schools headed onto the snow at @skiheavenly to explore the Tahoe Basin at 8,200 feet.

Equipped with snowshoes, they learned how the snowpack builds and feeds our watershed, how biodiversity supports forest health, and how careers like ski patrol help keep people safe in the mountains (with the help of a few very good patrol dogs).

This kind of hands-on learning is possible thanks to the collaboration of the South Tahoe Environmental Education Coalition and dedicated local partners who believe in the value of connecting students to the place they call home.

When young people experience Tahoe this way, they don’t just learn about the environment, they begin to see themselves as part of protecting it.

Thank you to the educators, partners, and mentors who made these last two days possible.

The plan outlines a specific sequence where you first gather and discuss available and relevant information. Second, informed by the group, weather, snow conditions, avalanche concerns and your knowledge of the local terrain, discuss and adapt to a mindset about today’s avalanche terrain exposure. Third, make decisions about terrain prior to engaging with choices in the field.

Phil and I slung 50+ Breakfast Burritos out Saturday morning for the @laketahoesnowmobilers then after I took 26, 22, 21 or 25 sledders out into the backcountry... still counting but about 25 haha 🤷

Days like these, while busy and a little stressful at times are some of the most rewarding days on sleds for me. I was lucky to be born into Snowmobiles but so many people are either just getting into it, or learning what these new sleds can do. A snowmobile club, professional education and time on the snow is where you progress as a rider. Pretty cool experience to be part of something bigger than just riding sleds.

Join a club, it's what keeps snowmobiling alive. I think ours is the best but your area probably has a great one too. If they don't, start one! Also, take a first timer out and plant a seed, maybe a new sledder will grow, thanks for joining us @jakethelegend45
