There’s a golden thread that started weaving its way through my life thirteen+ years ago. At the time, I couldn’t see where it was going. I was just trying to make it through, stay sober & survive.

Eric was my first roommate in sobriety. I got to see him in Atlanta for the first time in twelve years, and somehow, being with him, I felt both the distance of all those years and the closeness of that very first one. He knew me when this kind of life felt impossible, unreachable. Seeing him again brought me right back to the beginning.

And there I was, in a city I’d never been to, attending a construction conference for a career I could never have pictured for myself. I kept thinking about the woman I was before sobriety. The woman I was in that first year and all of the life that happened between her and me.

I don’t think she would believe me if I told her where we are now.

Somehow that golden thread carried me all the way here, and, for one beautiful day, back to someone who was there when it began.

Thank you ATL, what a city! Forever grateful.
