Dear Norfolk State University,

“To be young, gifted, and Black” — that dream carried me here.

To the kid in me who always said, “I’m going to an HBCU,” to the ones who came before me, to my mom and mentor who laid the foundation — I knew NSU was my home even when I didn’t wanna stay local. Five years later, I learned this journey wasn’t a race with anybody but myself and God. COVID tried to shake me, life threw what it threw, and yet on December 6th, I got to walk that stage. We did that.

From dorm rooms that watched me grow, to days I questioned if I even saw a future in myself — thank you for helping me find it. Thank you for letting me serve, lead, fall, get back up, and become.

To the out-of-state kid who worried about balances, scholarships, skipped classes, deadlines and all — I made it. Not perfect, but present. Not always confident, but always chosen.

But through every L, every prayer, every restart — I’m still here.
And now I can proudly say I earned my B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Exercise Science & Psychology.

This is only the beginning. Next stop — Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or Social Work. I’m stepping into purpose, into power, into the version of me that little me prayed for.

First and foremost I want to give all my honor and thanks to the man above my Lord and Savior for all the miracles he got me through. I had expectations and didn’t let my excuses tailor my mindset of delayed not denied you always know your time even as I graduate Saturday. To alpha, thank you for taking an idea I always wanted to be a dream come true. Through this process I was able to succeed from getting opportunities opened, networking, invaluable lessons that had reasoning, and lastly a brotherhood I couldn’t ask more of. This fraternity is more than an organization which still stands on its aims, mission, and objectives.

To my pros thank you for showing me and guiding me from constant talks good and bad how to hold the light high and not living up to the brothers before you leaving your own story.

To my pyramid I appreciate y’all for taking a chance on a kid from Southeast Washington, D.C. and bringing me in to this lifelong brotherhood. I appreciate you guys pouring your time and molding me because I didn’t leave the same man I joined. I know we ain’t see eye to eye with a lot of stuff but I know I can always count on y’all.

To my lbs Always Follow Suit. words can’t even explain the gratitude I have for you guys I love y’all. I wouldn’t replace you guys for nothing through every challenge cry, laugh, every moment couldn’t be broken this is truly a family. From the countless disagreements I understand and appreciate y’all for never counting me out never trying to change who I am 13 in 13 out.

Neos keep holding the light high you guys are up next thanks for paving the way for the next group of brothers.

Nephews I didn’t have as much time with you guys but you know I’ll always be there for y’all.

Lastly being apart of this esteemed fraternity it is a honor I’ll carry for a lifetime. We party hard we stay up late but most of all we graduate. College days swiftly pass but I can’t forget happy founders day to the greatest fraternity on earth to not sharing a month with any other. 🤙🏽👨🏽‍🎓
