Today marks four years since I had my last drink.

I’ve gone back and forth about sharing this part of my life. The people closest to me knew how bad it had gotten. Most people didn’t.

Alcohol slowly became the thing everything else revolved around. Toward the end, I wasn’t drinking to have fun anymore. I was drinking to maintain. To feel normal, get through the day, and make sure I knew where the next drink was coming from.

Then I lost my dad to cancer.

My best friend. My hero. The person who understood me better than anyone.

Whatever control I thought I still had disappeared.

I was drinking liquor from the time I woke up, often around 5am, until I blacked out or passed out. Most days it was full bottles of whiskey or vodka. I was blacking out multiple nights a week and waking up to stories about things I’d said or done that I couldn’t remember.

I was becoming someone I didn’t recognize.

I finally admitted it was beyond my control. I started going to AA every day, sometimes still drunk, because for that one hour I knew I wouldn’t drink. There were failed attempts to stop and a lot of wondering if this was just who I was going to be.

That went on until September 10, 2022.

Today is four years.

Four years of actually being here.

Four years of remembering my nights. Waking up clearheaded. Being present for my wife and kids. Learning how to deal with grief, stress, fear, happiness and life without trying to numb all of it.

Sobriety hasn’t made life perfect.

But it gave me my life back.

Maybe somebody reading this is quietly fighting the same battle.

You don’t have to have the rest of your life figured out.

Sometimes you just have to make one decision, and then make it again tomorrow.

Four years. And I’m damn proud of myself.

My dad always ended with this. I now have it tattooed on my forearm in his handwriting:

Who loves ya, baby! ❤️

What makes a space?

What makes it warm and full of life even before the people?

I love the details of @hooliganscoffeehouse and am always inspired to capture them from wherever I’m sitting. A lot of thought and effort has gone into it and it’s attracted a group of regulars and transients that bring good energy and growth, just like the plants that surround.

There aren’t too many coffee shops out here that have that warm welcome even before you talk to someone. A place that feels like home away from home and that I can just sit and relax.

I’ve had wonderful conversations there since it opened. Whether it be with the owners, friends, or people I just met.

Thanks for creating a beautiful space.
