@tayahien I met you as a little 7 year old girl bulling the boys and now to see you as a baddy woman is the best. You have went though every transition in your life around me: moving to NYC at 17, loss of your mother, going to FIT and now moving back to the west coast. I’m so proud of you and your mom could have never wanted anything more. Good luck honnnaaayyy

this is one of the best days of my life, made special by all these lovely people. the first meeting for our second book, “emperor of gladness” by ocean vuong, august 24th 2025. tapping in to this meeting moves me. i am reminded again that progress is not linear. we learn what is passed down to us as wisdom from our elders - then we are humbled as we try to adapt these incongruent teachings into our present day. we unknowingly become threats to ourselves as we latch on to the identities that no longer allow us to evolve. to survive, we learn to reshape ourselves as the shape of the world changes around us. we discover where we are accepted and rejected as we allow our vulnerabilities to show. if i am too tethered to my own thinking, i lose sense of community.

this is where book club comes in. it forces us to meet with those outside of our circles, people we would normally not speak deeply with, or openly disagree with. it is uncommon to have a safe place for discourse, as people have become increasingly, yet understandably, more sensitive. inundated with information, our capacities are challenged every day. the unfortunate side effect, i think, is that we may just be getting better at masking rather than actually adapting. grazina, the old woman at the heart of the book, says it plainly: “To be alive and try to be a decent person, and not turn it into anything big or grand, that’s the hardest thing of all.” recognizing this is beautiful to me, because it is the first step to actually loving and forgiving. thank you all, for being together, on this treacherous, yet exciting, adventure in pursuit of our hopes and dreams (more food and wine).

thank you @greendome_garden for graciously hosting us and @officialinagarten for cooking delicious yakitori for us to enjoy 🍢
