“I once wrote a poem about my mom and I’ve continued to do so every time since.”

Motherhood has always been an enigma to me.
In 2023 I wrote a poem when I was angry at my Mother.

Over the years this poem has become something dear. No longer an angry question aimed at understanding, but a gentle “I notice.”

That being said, after countless (sweet) pressure from my loved ones, I’ve finally decided to create a visual for the poem.

Please stay tuned in as our team presents the film: “Mother’s Day: A Visual Poem” soon.

Filming: May 1st-3rd, 2026.

Nostos, as in homecoming. A reclamation and return to the past. Gleaming in memory, the word resurfaces from freshman year. I find that so much language returns when a landscape returns.

I missed the insistent sky, bathed in a glow so brilliant one has to squint. The quiet contentment of sleeping beside a friend, as if we were children again. Compliments exchanged with strangers like valentines. In the Brooklyn Museum, a woman waiting in line giddily shares a secret: her daughter is having a baby. After fireworks in Central Park, someone begins to sing “Auld Lang Syne,” and we shiver and laugh in the anonymous dark as we muddle the lyrics. “Happy New Year, guys!” A child’s voice calls afterwards. Tipsy students parkour down the stairs, giggling.

Outside a bakery, my friend looks at me with such simple warmth, and I realize we have no need to speak; we are merely being—and have been and will be. In my mind hums the refrain of liturgy: “World without end.” Yes, I would like another cup of tea before I go.

I juggle a multitude of emotions about being American, but my heart during my last trip was gentler towards the place that shaped me, landing near James Baldwin’s “I love America more than any other country in the world and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.” I condemn the malice and injustice ongoing in the United States, and my heart breaks for families torn apart and those who have been silenced. It is a country I feel estranged from in some ways, that I fear for, and yet it is also the nation that holds those dearest to me.

Grief and protest intertwine with gratitude and nostalgia (linked to the Greek “nostos” above). It was a gift to grow up with an emphasis on earnest goodness and independence and the belief that dreams are within reach with due dedication. “Great!” We would say to one another, “Excellent! Wonderful!” I hope to never forsake this persistence and enthusiasm. I was brought up in the womb of faith, believing that every person is a neighbor to break bread with, someone exquisitely beloved. Years later, almost 4,000 miles away, I refuse to live otherwise.
