The marinara on your plate here started as one woman’s recipe in a Brooklyn grocery store.

The Montemarano family came over from Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi and set up shop at 492 President Street. The store got so busy that Angelo opened a tavern across the yard, and his wife Filomena cooked her recipes from home with ingredients pulled straight off the shelves.

Decades later, five of their sons went off to World War II. One stayed home to keep the tavern running.

Here’s what you need to know:

• Filomena’s recipe still anchors the whole menu, and the sauce has won awards.
• Her great-grandson PJ worked out the bottled version with his uncle Chip, now in three flavors including hot peppers.
• Grab a jar on the way out, or have it shipped anywhere in the country.

A grocery store in Brooklyn to the top of Signal Hill, and the sauce made the whole trip.
