Years ago somebody told me that retail was dead…something I found very interesting coming from a man who sold ties for a living. In truth, I have been obsessed with retail since I was a little kid - the idea that you can create a world and invite somebody into it always felt so special. I knew @12_things had to exist as a store, even if only temporarily (and even before anybody wanted it to). The old-fashioned way; open a physical space, meet people and build it from there. The design is very much pulled from my own experiences; there’s a suspended office ceiling from my corporate days, hospital-grade vinyl underfoot and reclaimed vault drawers that each perfume comes in. You buy a piece of the store when you buy a perfume; there’s only a finite amount, and yes, you might think that’s terribly pretentious, but ultimately it’s a brand selling perfumes with notes of plastic, metal, and dust, so the scope for doing something different is wide open. Despite the subject matter, 12_things is a hopeful brand. Perhaps we can focus on being a lil weird, doing something different and having fun while living in a fairly apocalyptic world.
