The Research Matchup, Week 5: TCU v #10 BYU

We’re taking the matchup outside this week because university research, at its very best, helps solve problems and improve lives in our own backyards.

From a 3,700-acre living laboratory in Fort Worth to hidden ice reservoirs high in the mountains of the American West, TCU and BYU researchers are getting out in the field (literally) to better understand and protect natural resources for generations of Horned Frogs and Cougars to come.

At BYU: As the American West faces increasingly hot and dry conditions, geology professor Greg Carling’s research took him and his students high into the mountains of Utah and Colorado looking for solutions. Their hands-on study of rock glaciers, and the hidden reservoirs of ice within them, could help communities better understand and manage an important source of water long after the snow melts.

At TCU: As North Texas grows, preserving natural spaces is imperative. That challenge motivates Omar Harvey, director of the Natural Resources Research Initiative. He, along with faculty and student researchers, are turning the 3,700-acre Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge into a living laboratory, giving Horned Frogs hands-on research experience while generating insights that can help Fort Worth protect its own “Central Park.”

Only one team can win on game day. Go Frogs! Everybody wins when universities invest in research. Go research.

Being a Black beekeeper today is about far more than just harvesting honey—it’s a powerful movement of reclamation, healing, and community.

Reclaiming Ancestral Roots: Stepping into a bee suit honors a deep, historic connection to agriculture and land stewardship that spans back generations.

Food Sovereignty & Justice: Many Black apiarists place the hives in urban areas and food deserts, boosting local pollination, teaching self-reliance, and providing fresh, natural medicine to underserved communities.

Healing & Mindfulness: Working with a hive requires calm, focus, and presence. For many, it serves as a radical act of self-care and therapy.

Changing the Face of Farming: By showing up in a space historically lacking diversity, Black beekeepers are shattering stereotypes and inspiring the next generation to reclaim their place in nature.

We love our trees! 🌳💜🌳

For the 10th consecutive year, the Arbor Day Foundation recognized TCU as a Tree Campus. In honor of the 10 years, our amazing grounds crew planted 10 new trees to join the approximately 3,000 trees on campus.

Kim Drenner ’08 (MS ’10) arrived at @texaschristianuniversity as a soccer recruit planning to study journalism. She left as a double @tcuensc alumna with a thesis researched in a Costa Rican cloud forest and a clear mission: hold industry accountable to the planet.

Today, as head of environmental impact at @patagonia, she’s doing exactly that, leading a global decarbonization effort, advising on environmental legislation and helping set the standard for the entire outdoor apparel industry.

Catch her story in 𝘛𝘊𝘜 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘦’s newest installment of 𝘍𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 via the link in our bio.

During our next general meeting on 11/19, TCU Chemistry Club is excited to host Dr. David Laviska from the ACS Green Chemistry Institute for a special presentation on Green Chemistry: Education and Application. Dr. Laviska will discuss how green chemistry principles are driving sustainable innovation and shaping education, offering students insight into future opportunities within the field.

Join us for free dinner at 5:00 PM, followed by the virtual speaker event at 5:15 PM in Lecture Hall 1. To help students power through the final stretch of the semester, we’ll also be raffling off chemistry-themed wellness and study gifts- including mugs, notebooks, and other fun items perfect for finals week. Plus, attendees can grab informative flyers and small giveaways related to ACS and green chemistry!

We hope to see you there and learn alongside you about the future of sustainable chemistry! 🌿🧪

This summer, TCU students journeyed to South Africa through the Biodiversity and Human Development study abroad course led by Dr. Mike Slattery, Dr. Tory Bennett, and Dr. William Fowlds. In just two weeks, the groups of students experienced the richness of South African culture, worked hands-on with wildlife, including rhinos, and discovered how conservation and community are deeply connected. 🦏

From meeting Nelson Mandela’s former prison guard to assisting with rhino, zebra, and nyala procedures in the wild, students gained a transformative perspective on how sustainability and business intersect.

Students across TCU could take part in the trip, regardless of their area of study. As sophomore Hoang Thu Trang Pham, a business information system & supply chain student student on the trip, shared: “I discovered that conservation is about protecting everything, not just the big animals or towering trees, but also the smallest, often overlooked parts of our ecosystem.”

Today, on #WorldRhinoDay, we celebrate these extraordinary creatures and the lessons they inspire: that conservation is a shared responsibility across disciplines and borders. 💜

Dr. Rhiannon Mayne, Environmental & Sustainability Science professor and curator of TCU’s Monnig Meteorite Collection, has been honored with the 2025 Meteoritical Society Service Award — one of only five awards the Society presents each year! This international honor recognizes her outstanding service, leadership, and dedication to advancing meteoritics and planetary science.

From a postdoc at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History to 16 years at TCU, she has transformed the Monnig Collection from fewer than 1,400 meteorites to more than 2,500 new additions, advanced research, and inspired many through outreach and education.

Congratulations, Dr. Mayne! ✨

This youngster was almost ready to venture out on her own, and so it was time to fit her first tracking collar, ready for an independent life. It’s an important tool in our efforts to ensure that our children and our children’s children get to one day see these almost prehistoric creatures roaming wild and free as they should be.

Once her collar was fitted, we collected DNA samples, as per government regulations, for the RhODIS database, which allows investigators to linked poached horns to specific individuals, as well as help us determine the paternity of offspring born on Amakhala. A health check was performed and her ears were notched for identification purposes. We took a couple of photos and then gave her a reversal agent to bring her out of sedation. We watched her wake up and stroll off to find her mom, who’ll she hang out with until she’s ready to be on her own.

With enormous thanks to @tcuensc , @texaschristianuniversity and @drmslattery for sponsoring this procedure. As always, we’re so grateful to @williamfowlds , @happily.lost.in.africa , and the rest of the team from #ikhalavetwildlifeservices & @ikhalavetclinic , and of course to @jollygreen16 and the rest of the @amakhala_game_reserve ecology team and the Anti-Poaching Unit for keeping the team safe while they worked 💛

Step into the field with Kyla Moberly, TCU biology and environmental science student. 🦏🌿

Kyla recently joined fellow Horned Frogs on a study abroad trip in South Africa focused on biodiversity and conservation.

In this reel, she shares behind-the-scenes photos from a once-in-a-lifetime experience: assisting with a rhino procedure in the field.
