It is Sensory Processing Disorder Awareness Month and the end of Invisible Disabilities Awareness week, so today we are talking about how theaters are creating accessible spaces for neurodiverse audiences. Shoutout to @thewilmatheater and @nycchildrenstheater, who we have highlighted in this post, as well as all other theaters who are working to ensure neurodivergent patrons can enjoy their performances.

In this post, we share some ideas for what theaters can do to make their spaces for accessible for Autistic and other neurodivergent people, as well as insights from theaters on their current practices.

At the end, we also shared some upcoming shows with sensory-friendly or relaxed performances coming up this fall/winter.

Every transition is a turning point for an arts organization. That was the heart of Tom O’Connor’s session at the Spektrix Arts Innovation Summit, where he joined Kit Ingui of Williamstown Theatre Festival for a conversation about leading through organizational change.

Thank you to Spektrix for bringing together such a thoughtful group and to everyone who shared their insightful sessions. It was great to catch up with clients and colleagues from across the field—including the great folks from Hudson Valley Shakespeare, NY Theatre Workshop, MCC Theater, TDF, Capacity, and many more.
