An extraordinary private museum of historic teawares 🇬🇧

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

The Chitra Collection is a wonderfull collection of 2000 teapots. Its created by Nirmal Sethia the Chairman of Newby Teas and named in honour of his late wife Chitra. Nirmal Sethia began the collection in 2011 as a way of recording and preserving the history of tea. We had a guided tour of the collection by the curator and she was amazing. The collection has items belonging to Marie Antoinette, Admiral Lord Nelson, Queen Victoria and a tea cady belonging to President Roosevelt. Its a charitable organisation called the N. Serhia Foundation that invests heavily in education, and the medical world.

I was dazzled by the object handling session and tour today of the Chitra Collection with the Oriental Ceramic Society. Founded by Nirmal Sethia, chairman of Newby Teas, the Chitra Collection holds nearly 2,000 tea wares and is dedicated to history of tea across the world, in memory of Sethia’s wife Chitra, who loved drinking tea. There were fascinating tea wares on display, including a teapot commissioned by the founder, which is covered in diamonds and was recently valued for insurance at 3 million GBP, breaking the Guinness World Record for a teapot! I’m pictured with a Kangxi teapot.

Two groups of #kentpotters visited the incredible Chitra Collection today…

It was a wonderful opportunity to visit this private museum housed within the Newby London Boutique, Clerkenwell which is not normally open to the public.

It was set up in 2011 by Nirmal Sethia, Chairman of the luxury tea company “Newby Teas” and he set about acquiring the world’s greatest collection of teawares. It now totals almost 2000 objects from Europe, Asia and The Americas and over 1000 years of tea history!

We had a tour, were invited to handle a selection of their priceless collection ❤️ and enjoyed a lovely cup of tea!

With many thanks to Grace @tea.museum for our private tour of this fascinating collection and for putting together the workshop.

You can read more about the collection by visiting their website www.chitracollection.com

Don't miss our next zoom lecture 'Tea and the Invention of European Porcelain' by Grace Benham on Thursday 23 July at 6pm (UK).

The lecture will explore how the rise of tea drinking in Europe drove the invention of hard-paste porcelain at Meissen, shaping new materials, forms, and decorative styles inspired by Chinese imports.

Grace Benham is the curator of the Chitra Collection @tea.museum , one of the world’s most comprehensive private collections of historic teawares. The collection traces the global story of tea through nearly 2,000 objects from Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
