Watches, Whisky, Dogs, And Rucking. Is there more to Life?
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
This is a classic Last Word made by @fchrisgrimm @sugarandolives . I’ll talk about this perfect drink itself in another post. But I hope it shall become obvious why I’m toasting you all with this particular drink today.

Halloween is my favorite holiday. Every year I get sick the week before it. The days get short and the prospect of winter stretches out in front of me. Since I’ve been tied to an academic calendar most of my life, the year is lopsidedly stressful. This week has always been the hardest of the year for me — as a kid, a student, and as a teacher. Yet I still love Halloween, despite all that.

I had my 1st date with my husband 32 years ago on Halloween. The week before, I was sick, depressed, and miserable. I got on the bus at school and made some guy move all the stuff he had piled on the seat next to him so I could sit. For some reason the guy started talking to me anyway. I remember this clearly: we talked about Joe Biden, who had just withdrawn from the USA presidential race at the time. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Halloween has its roots in the Celtic harvest festival of Samhain. The Celtic New Year starts with death, often represented by the figure of an old wise woman, a witch, a crone. It’s one of the liminal times of the year, when spirits were thought to cross over to living world. If you didn’t want one to find you, you could wear a mask.

Lots of cultures have traditions celebrating the cycle of life/death, focusing on boundaries between worlds. Mexican Day of the Dead is currently celebrated in a way that merges it a bit with Halloween, but its roots probably go back to Toltec celebrations that occurred in mid-summer. Symbolism tracing back to the Norse, Ancient Egypt and China all have circular life/death motifs.

Happy Halloween! Wear a mask if you don’t want to talk to any spirits! Happy New Year!

Are you drawn to pretty drinks or scary ones with weird combos of ingredients?
Do you tend toward easygoing or challenging spirits? Do you judge others for choosing easy/simple?

These are real questions. I already know what *I* think – I live with me. I’ll lay my cards down lest anyone think I sit here on a high throne of selfimportance.
My answers: 4 yes’s & a yes/no.

No throne. I sit on the floor wondering where everyone got chairs because I didn’t see any chairs. Besides, from the floor I can see the bottoms of people’s shoes & they’re very dirty. Eww.

If that metaphor made no sense, I’ll put it this way. I’m a die-hard brown spirits fan. I’ve been drinking Scotch since 1792. I only offer that late date because I dont want to be trendy. I’d say I drank rye before that but *scoff* rye is newfangled for an American spirit! Robert Laird’s great-grandpappy learned to distill applejack from a recipe I tattooed on my own shoulder with a rooster feather while escaping the precursor to phylloxera in the 1600s. That’s the true origin of the term “cocktail.” Not sure how Mr. Wondrich missed that one in the archives — sheesh!

I may have just lost my license to practice history in any state that teaches evolution, but now that I’ve clearly established my Serious Drinks Person bona fides I’ll say I also enjoy gin sours with flower garnishes. They taste good. And pastel ones sure are prettty. I do still expect to smell or eat whatever is in a drink though. So as lovely as a bigass Floribunda rose is, it’s jarring to see in a cocktail pic when it has no aroma. As I’ve grumbled before, a baby or puppy garnish would be just as functional.

So I’m judgey. I don’t especially like certain colors of clothes, much dance music, or beige cars. Bleh. But I’m not going to judge YOU for all that. You may be a wonderful person. You’ve likely got a better set of financial priorities than I do. Because clearly a beige car must’ve been deeply discounted. I mean, why else!? It’s like drinking flavored gin. Or spiced rum. Or chill filtered whisky. Serious Drinks Persons don’t do those things.* … Right? *I’ve done them all. With a dietcola back & a side of truffle fries. I dont repent

National Scotch Day
Does the froth on top of this rye cocktail bother some folk? I didn’t stir it — I shook it.
I hope we can agree that people should eat & drink what they like. I actually enjoy learning better ways of doing things from all y’all — that’s why I’m here. Nobody is ever too old or experienced to know everything, least of all me. But I have a particular distaste for people telling me I’m “doing it wrong” when they know less than I do or — even worse — simply assume they know more (which isn’t quite same thing). Yes I sometimes shake drinks that “rules” admonish not to. I’ve thought through my reasons & am happy to discuss & disagree & argue about them. I’ve been convinced to change my ways many times. I’ve also done some convincing. But I’m utterly unmoved when told “because you’re not supposed to” or simply that some authority said not to or — ugh — some *famous* authority said not to. That just makes me spend more time on critical thinking skills with my students.

As a neighbor once said “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to reform [pause and reflect]” Mark Twain, 1904 (he’s quoted both ways)

This is the same man who asked his beloved wife Olivia to ready for his homecoming “a bottle of Scotch whisky, a lemon, some crushed sugar, & a bottle of Angostura bitters. Ever since I have been in London I have taken in a wine glass what is called a cock-tail (made with these ingredients) before breakfast, before dinner and before going to bed….” (1874)
He then describes how he can’t wait to see her, make out, have a drink, & get busy.

If anyone wants to appeal to authority, I choose Twain & beg off joining the majority. Everyone stirs? That’s nice. But without a reason to change what I’ve determined works well with my ice, technique, & spirits, I’m content.

Now excuse me while I go mix spiced rum with cream soda for #nationalscotchday
Someone just showed that to me & it’s really good.

The actual Benedictine & rye drink in the photo - which has citrus so IS “supposed to be” shaken 😉 is dedicated to @bipolarbartender who follows her own path & works hard -including this weekend. Cheers Evelina!

When your dogs are just waiting for you to hurry up and finish your nightcap so we can all call it a night 😴!

@christianbjurinder posted this un-named beauty last weekend, and since it contains four of my favorite ingredients in equal parts, most notably Amaro Sibilla, I had to try it. Sibilla may be my favorite amaro, or at least in the top three. .
.
.
While Christian served it stirred and up, 🍸 I wanted it right away and it was late, so I mixed it right my little glass, added a small bit of ice and stirred with my finger.
.
.
Boy did that hit the spot 🎯 So in the interest of posterity, I gave it a name! .

I can make a decent drink, I have the good fortune to regularly frequent some truly great bars & I know too much about cocktails to be happy with a mediocre drink. AND I’m always learning new things from all the amazing folks on drinkstagram. The down side of all this is Im rarely blown away by new places. I like to try them but I rarely go twice. Even many storied places turn out to be like the tale of the Emperor’s New Clothes: 🤷🏻‍♀️ .
.

But oh was I blown away by a new place in the Grassmarket of Edinburgh. @Thedragonfly has all the coziness of the best Scottish pubs coupled with a killer original cocktail menu that is whimsical & onpoint. I don’t do reviews. But since Im in Scotland working on a project on sense-of-place & liquor I have to highlight *this* place. The cocktail menu at The Dragonfly, created by Jamie Swift @tobytentoes is a fun, funny collection of drinks that are very conscious of being #scottishdrinks while also being absolutely worldly. And some are absolute masterpieces of balance & grace that could become the next classics. Obviously you all need to get your butts to Scotland. Whilst there dont miss the Dragonfly. ⚖️

I’m about to head to Scotland again where I’m sure to be drinking lots of yumilicious* whisky. So I’m taking the opportunity to savor some of the other glories of Bacchus (Succellus?) beforehand. 🍇 🧝🏾‍♂️ 🍇
Ok that’s a really obnoxious way of saying “I had a martini & it was good!” 🍸 🎯 🍸 *yumilicious, from ancient Latin, meaning yummy 📜 😋 📜

@teamf0xtr0t had asked if I wanted to do an event hosted by @fractionsofzero . The event is to create a similar looking drink, but having different ingredients. Similar to a doppelganger, but more of a #doppeltail !

Fox had wanted to do a coffee based drink with Averna. I had agreed and we both like whiskey as a main spirit, but I decided to change it up and went in a different direction. I went with gin because I wanted to incorporate the popular cold brew coffee GnT into a spirit forward drink. So our drinks are both spirit forward coffee drinks with an orange peel garnish. Since I am at a blank for naming this, I am going to name it something ridiculous that has nothing to do with the flavor of the drink! I'll name it after Fox and his love for dogs. Don't hate me Fox 😜! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"The Fox and the Hound"
1.5 oz coffee infused @tanqueraygin
1oz @tempus_fugit_spirits gran classico
0.5oz @anticaformula_official
0.25oz tonic syrup
2 dashes of black walnut bitters
Orange peel

Stir ingredients in a chilled mixing glass. Pour into a chilled rocks glass that contains a large ice cube. Express orange peel over drink.

4 days ago the vivacious & (as I’m increasingly aware) deceptively unassuming yet immensely talented Kori of @cocktailsmandurah tagged me in #ginsour #ginsourchallenge hosted by @drink_specialistsgr_ & running thru sept 15, 2018. The rules mandate 5 days to post a (presumably original) variation on a gin sour - containing gin, egg white & citrus. Given the time between the USA & Australia Im not quite sure when my clock runs out. I think it’s tomorrow night. So I’m pregaming right now, making things more complicated in the way that folks with philosophy degrees are wont to do.
Anyone who reads my long-ass posts may know I also obsess over learning about categories of liquor. The latest is sherry. So my gin sour will involve sherry. That much Im sure of. Just saying. Never fear! What I lack in technical prowess making drinks look instagram pretty I will try to make up for by obfuscation & then by tagging some much more talented mixologists so I can bask in reflected glory.

THE LAST WORD (Scotch version)
1:1:1:1 Laphroaig Scotch, green Chartreuse, Luxardo maraschino, fresh lime juice

This is the classic bartender geek drink, the underline on mixing — the last word. It strips away everything except proportion and balance. It is perfectly precise, with a ratio of 1:1:1:1 (hello math heads!) It is also often done by pouring a complete half jigger of each ingredient. It doesn’t matter if it’s oz or ml, an imperial jigger or metric. The point is equal proportions and filling one end of a jigger to the rim, making it an easy drink for a bartender to do quickly.

You can swap ingredients in a Last Word, but not as simply as with some other drinks. Replacing one ingredient with another — and seeing if the drink still works — tests the limits of proportion and balance for each ingredient. Is one thing overpowering the other? Is it a different drink now? Simply swapping an ingredient, even among brands of gin, might work & might not. Swapping in Laphraoig for gin works, while a lowland Scotch might not (try it! experiment!). Standard gin style for The Last Word is London dry like Plymouth or Bombay. A more floral less aromatic gin like Hendricks might not work well as well unless the liqueurs are swapped. But that’s not so simple: green Chartreuse is unusual for a liqueur at 55%ABV — as strong as cask strength whisky. Thus (one interpretation of) the name: The Last Word.
If you’ve already played with The Last Word, what has worked? Even more importantly: What hasn’t and WHY? Come on, tell! Our failures are more important *as teaching tools* than our successes.
