OUT OF CHAOS — Paper from the Floor of Francis Bacon’s Studio.
Just off the Pony press, this modest but compelling catalogue we made for Michael Hoppen Gallery’s intimate and remarkable collection of paper artefacts quite literally from the chaotic floor of Francis Bacon’s studio (with a number of them featured both recto and verso). Published to coincide with the gallery’s exhibition at Independent 20th Century at The Breuer, New York, in September. With a superb text by Robin Muir, and attired in a very pleasurable Bacon-pink Kendal Manilla cover, with excellent printing as always by Team Impression in Leeds.

The matches are coming thick and fast.

Our 1s look to build on their win at the weekend, with a league fixture against Bramhope tonight.

First home game of the season for our 1s so as much support as possible would be appreciated. Main pitch, 18:30 KO.

New work for London’s Premier Hair Salon @mvanclarke . They have recently installed a Japanese Head Spa Room at their luxury Marylebone and needed some creative literature to accompany the treatments available.

We were delighted to help out and created this gorgeous booklet which was beautifully printed by the folk @teamimpression_ .

DM us if we can help with your next project. S+B

ONE THING LEADS TO ANOTHER

1 TRIMITE, the paintmakers for industry. 5 Litres tin (1.10 IMP Galls) RAL 2004 Pure Orange (AKA International Orange by AHW), found object on a building site 1980.

2 METAL LINED CUBICLES THE PHOTO KID, cover of Ben Kelly’s 1974 RCA student thesis. A rusted mild steel sheet with machine-engraved letters. Title borrowed from William Burroughs 1964 novel - The Naked Lunch.
The Photo Kid is Ben Kelly’s other identity adopted in 1973.

3 HOWIE, shopfront Long Acre, Covent Garden 1976. Ben Kelly’s first client project. Perforated steel panels were located behind the glass panels in the entrance door. These became the inspiration for the OMD record sleeve four years later.

4 ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK, first album cover 1980. en Kelly and Peter Saville. Peter told me that he had an idea or a concept for the sleeve which was to use the least amount of cardboard possible (I think) but he couldn’t figure out how to make this work. I suggested to Peter to look at the entrance door to the Howie shop.
It should be a perforated sleeve.

5 FACTORY INTERNATIONAL (Aviva Studios) Manchester, 2023. Architects OMA. Ben Kelly and Brinkworth collaborated on the design of the public-facing interiors. The two-story perforated orange reception welcome desk and DJ booth referenced the OMD record sleeve, Factory Records and The Hacienda nightclub designed by Ben Kelly.
