![☕ Tuesday Tech Tea: the AI+ smartphone story.
AI+ launched in July 2025 calling itself "India's first fully sovereign smartphone," founded by Madhav Sheth, former Realme India CEO. The pitch: budget phones, data stored in India, no foreign software.
Then creators started digging. Gyan Therapy flagged apps whose own privacy policy named a China-based provider. TechWiser and TechBar alleged those apps were still hidden on newer units, and that the Nova Flip folding phone matched a ZTE Nubia device internally. Mrwhosetheboss added findings of his own: allegedly fake five-star reviews, camera samples photographers called implausible, and a terms page that seemingly ended with leftover chatbot text. All of this remains creator allegation. AI+ disputes it, saying the claims "lacked any credible technical basis."
One thing isn't allegation, it's in AI+'s own privacy policy: personal data can be shared with third parties, "including Credit Bureaus," for loan products.
Then there's the ad showing a Chinese man taking a loan in an Indian man's name, which Mrwhosetheboss called "borderline racist." Sheth stands by it, citing real banned Chinese loan apps linked to past harm.
Legally, this is real and ongoing. AI+ and Sheth took TechWiser and TechBar to the Delhi High Court. On April 28, 2026, the court granted an injunction against both channels without hearing them first. On May 20, after TechWiser's lawyer alleged a "completely fictitious" email address kept them from responding, the judge ordered Sheth to appear in person. The case is listed for October 5, 2026. No verdict yet.
Sheth has since told Maini he acted "in haste." AI+ says it's "reviewing the points raised."
This is bigger than one phone. It's creators versus a company using courts to fight criticism before anything's proven, while "Make in India" is a real selling point in electronics.
