, —I have something to say about the pythagorean comma, the small discrepancy in pitch of around a quarter of a semitone, that is observed when stacking twelve perfect fifths relative to seven octaves. it’s something to do with the arbitrary assignment of days of the year resulting in a quarter decimal differential but the not so arbitrary nature of numbers, the comma being approximately 23.46 cents, suspiciously close to the number of hours in a day but just not quite and anyway what does that matter, the thing I have to say about this has something to do with the insufficiency of language and how we can only attempt a fidelity of meaning in translating our experiences to someone through discrete sound and category and symbol and it is this struggling itself that allows us to even need to communicate at all, is it that tuning systems are a type of language or rather a constrained grammar of the lossy language that is music, something to do with the Tower of Babel and obviously something about god and what there was in the beginning, something to do with the word ‘comma’ itself also being of linguistic definition, coming from Ancient Greek ‘kómma’, meaning ‘to cut off’, the thing I’m wanting to circle back to has something to do with all this but I— ,

The Tectonics Festival comes to Brussels for the very first time.

On 19 and 20 June 2026, Brussels Philharmonic and Ictus present a two-day festival in Flagey, featuring new music, improvisation, sound art, and bold, boundary-pushing listening expériences.

Founded in 2012 by conductor Ilan Volkov, Tectonics is now one of the world’s leading festivals for contemporary and experimental music, bringing together symphonic music, electronics, performances and sound art.

Across the entire building, concerts, installations, performances and improvisations invite audiences to move freely and discover new ways of listening.

One of the most important dates in the Scottish new music calendar is just around the corner 🎵

@tectonicsglas returns to City Halls & Old Fruitmarket on 2 & 3 May 2026, staged by the @bbcsso and curated by Ilan Volkov.

This year’s programme fèatures three world premieres - new BBC commissions from Christopher Fox, Nicole Mitchell and Martin Smolka - plus three UK premieres. Scottish artists including Danielle Price and Callie Rose Petal feature alongside an international lineup of sound artists and composers.

🎟️ Weekend passes are only on sale until Friday 24 April, so if you’ve been thinking about it, now’s the time. Day passes also available.

Love how this photo shows part of the spatialisation in the galleries of City Halls, Glasgow, for the premiere of my timecode-supported polytemporal orchestral piece, ‘a point in the landscape’ with the @bbcsso at @tectonicsglas 24. Much more about how I composed works like this in my shortly forthcoming book, ‘Timecode-Supported Polytemporal Music: What It Is and How To Write It’ published by Vision Edition and available from @composersedition
