Ted Mishima - St. Johns

A fine conversationalist, photographer, and a wealth of knowledge. Spending time photographing Ted offered a closer look at the character and care that make him such a delight to be around for so many, qualities worth paying attention to.

“Father Time” - Portland, OR 2025

This was a surreal moment in several ways, not because of the three frames I took of this man, but because of the story of how it was made.

I had been trying to find Tasha on the lower southwest riverbank in Portland, where I had heard they had moved. I was borrowing a Mamiya C220 from Ted Mishima and had just finished a roll photographing some boats by the Ross Island Bridge. I quickly loaded my last roll and began walking back to my car in hopes of running into Tasha.

As I approached the Tilikum Crossing Bridge, I noticed a man walking down the south side of the approach with a bindle. He said hello and commented on the TLR I was carrying and my mirrorless slung to my side.

We spoke for nearly 30 minutes as the sun set below the west hills. It will always be one of the most bizarre and oddly spiritual conversations I have ever had. As the conversation came to an end, I asked if I could make a portrait of him on the concrete block. The caveat was that I could not photograph him with my mirrorless or my phone. I really wanted to capture him on my Lumix because I was confident with it in low-light situations, but he adamantly resisted anything digital being pointed at him, including taking a light reading with my phone.

I opened the aperture on the medium format camera and asked him to lean against the concrete block and look into the lens for a moment. He proceeded to flail around and try to distract me. I took one frame of him making a face, and the other two I made by moving to my right and getting him to follow me, where he finally relaxed and was himself on the third frame. I was not able to capture anything after that.

Composing the photo properly never even fully entered my mind. I had very little sense of where the bridge started and eventually intersected with his head, and I really had no clue where to set my shutter speed as it seemed to get darker by the second with the sun disappearing to the west.

All of that to say, I love this image and I loved the moment. I would have been pleased if there had been any exposure at all on the film, just to have a visual memory of the encounter.
