15 August 2024 - “You can pretend her eyes don’t see you all you like, but your sixth sense tells you that she does. This, my dear, will haunt you….”. It’s 77 years since Partition. My film ‘Lumen’, 2021 [a film still from which is shown in Image 5] draws in part on my mother’s memories and experiences of this brutal history.

Posted @withregram • @brownhistory 77 years later, the tragedy of Partition is still a historical period that remains exceptionally difficult to understand. It is considered to be one of the largest mass migrations in human history. The exact toll is still unknown, but many estimate that two to three million people died in the carnage. Witnesses who were children in 1947 are now in their eighties and nineties, meaning that these stories and records are slowly leaving us, but the trauma of the past often remain with us. "Whale fall" Still bts

Whale fall - In the middle of an Irish peat bog, the inexplicable remains of a humpback whale are
discovered by two rural women. Drawn into the mystery of how and why it has appeared,
they soon realise the whale is exerting its own magnetic force; summoning the ghosts of
lifeforms and ecosystems obliterated in the name of 'progress'. As the women explore its
origins, they confront old divisions and differing views on the worlds gone before, and the
worlds yet to come. Part ecological horror, part existentialist drama, Whale Fall is a striking
meditation on the consequences of the so-called Anthropocene - our current era of
human-induced planetary change.

18.11.2023 - The narrative of my film ‘Lumen’, 2021 is underpinned by the entangled histories of colonialism dating back to the 1600s & the emergence of free market trade sanctioned by Elizabeth I, symbolically present in my film through references in the trade of lapis under both the Dutch & English East India Companies as well as archival material dating back to 1765 that I researched during my Fellowship at Yale Centre for British Art, Yale University 2019-2020 & whilst I was the 2009 Andrew Mellon Fellow at the YCBA, Yale. But it’s important to know that references to this pivotal #entangled colonial histories appeared in my video work ‘Untitled (Woman in Blue Weeping)’, 1996, commissioned by INIVA (uk) & exhibited at UCL in the exhibition ‘The Visible and Invisible: Representing the Body in the City’, 1996. I’ve spoken publicly about this these references to our #entangledpasts in many contexts including at Duke University (‘Shades of Black’ conference, 2001) & subsequently at Conway Hall, London, 2012 - part of a closed (but recorded) symposium organised by #lubainahimid (at which Griselda Pollock was present). But it’s important I feel to underline that first & foremost my film ‘Lumen’ is not a documentary piece, but an artwork. And there are of course many other significant archival references (eg film footage filmed by members of the British Raj in India from circa 1910 onwards) as well as poetic & literary sources that underpin & have inspired the making of ‘Lumen’, 2021.

If you’d like to hear more about the formal aesthetic, conceptual & historic underpinnings of my film ‘Lumen’ and experience (or re-experience this work) as part of the screening of ‘Lumen’ alongside an ‘in-conversation’ with Griselda Pollock, do join us tomorrow 19 November 2023, at 3:45pm at the Prince Charles Cinema, Leicester Sq, London. The event is part of the closing events & bookend to ‘Medium and Memory’ curated by Griselda, hosted at Hackelbury Fine Art. All welcome. Huge thanks to @hackelburyfineart & @filmvidumbrella who’ve been an absolute joy to work with ♥️.

Posted @withregram • @hackelburyfineart Join us on Sunday the 19 November, 3:45PM at the Prince Charles Cinema for a Screening of 𝘓𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘯 🎥 🎞️

Directed by Sutapa Biswas, starring Natasha Patel.

Sutapa Biswas will be in conversation with Griselda Pollock after the screening.

𝘓𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘯 is the name for a unit of light – a gradient of radiance. It is also an anatomical term for a bodily cavity or conduit, such as an artery, along which blood flows. These two meanings converge in the metaphor of ‘light at the end of a tunnel’; an expression that helps light a way into Sutapa Biswas’s film 𝘓𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘯, setting the scene for its fluctuations of clarity and darkness, its alternating states of euphoria and trauma, its lurches between poetry and pathology.

With special thanks to Film and Video Umbrella.

15.5.2023 - Amazing what you find when you revisit more than one place at the same time. Looking through a monograph published about my works (2004) in order to check on a couple of citations for a piece being published in a forthcoming publication edited by #ameliajones @amelia.jones.la1987 , and these pages of an essay by Griselda Pollock about my work really caught me in my tracks (in a good way) all over again. Also great to see Guy Brett’s and Laura Mulvey’s essays about my works. It’s a beautiful book ♥️🙏🏾 that also includes essays by Ian Baucom, Moira Roth & Stephanie Snyder @stephanie.snyder.curator with an intro by Gilane Tawadros @gtawadros .
Here’s an excerpt from Griselda’s essay: ‘It was her [Sutapa Biswas] critique [1981-1985] that forced us all to acknowledge the Eurocentric limits of the discourses within which we practised. Her challenge was mounted face to face, not at a level of abstract taunts, but the direct engagement of dialogue people sharing a space, a space thus assumed by her generosity to be able and willing to enlarge the critical discourse to accommodate the subjects of class, gender and race in their intricate and painful configurations between us and within us. She demanded change, and the course then altered. With the question of imperialism and its racist practices no longer repressed, the space of the studio and the lecture theatre had to be made to articulate the pressure of the social and psychic relations that imperialism, as a still powerful structure, installed in us all. Instead of presenting binary oppositions, Sutapa Biswas’s practice as a student and a producer of artworks systematically eroded the cliche of accusation, and hence did not induce defensive withdrawal stemming from guilt. This is visible in the work she produced as a conclusion to her degree, ‘Housewives with Steak-knives’.”
