For young players, basketball can create opportunity long before a professional contract or college decision arrives. With NIL expanding the financial possibilities around high school athletes, it can also bring more adults into a family’s circle who see a player’s potential as something they can benefit from later.

Former NBA guard Brandon Jennings reflected on how that dynamic affected him growing up. He recalled that people around talented players often look closely at their home situation, identify where a family may be vulnerable, and position financial support as help.

In Jennings’ case, he said his mother had received around $250,000 by the time he reached 11th grade. At the time, he saw people helping his family and telling him they cared about his future. But after leaving high school to play professionally in Italy, Jennings said the calls for repayment began and that he ultimately had to pay the money back.

Not every person who supports a young athlete has bad intentions. But families should understand the terms, motivations, and expectations behind any financial relationship built around a player’s future.

As Jennings put it, some people were not simply supporting him, they were “banking on my success.”

Tee Morant, father of Portland Trailblazer star Ja Morant, sat down and pulled back the curtain on the parenting philosophy that shaped one of the NBA’s most dynamic players from the time he was a kid.

What Tee describes is less a coaching strategy and more a deeply held belief about what a young person actually needs to reach their potential. Praise and approval, in his view, carry a cost when they come too early or too freely. The standard he held in his household was built around the destination, not the milestones along the way. That consistency, maintained across years and across every stage of Ja’s development, is what Tee credits with keeping his son hungry long after most players in his position would have had every reason to feel satisfied.
