Route 66: TexMex / Two weeks ago, I drove the Texas portion of Route 66, crossed into New Mexico, but then continued South in Santa Rosa towards Roswell for some National Parks. I came back up to Albuquerque for a few days, then veered off for NPs in Colorado, to come back down to Santa Fe this past weekend. This morning, I completed the New Mexico portion of Route 66. 🌶️🤠 Support small businesses.

If you only make ONE stop in Tucumcari, this needs to be on the list. 🛣️🌵

Welcome to @teepeecurios, one of the most recognizable surviving landmarks on Route 66 in Tucumcari, New Mexico.

The building started life as a Gulf gas station in the early days of Route 66, serving travelers making their way across the New Mexico desert. When Route 66 tourism exploded after World War II, the business evolved with it, eventually becoming a souvenir shop and adding the giant concrete teepee ⛺️ shaped entrance that made it impossible for passing motorists to ignore.

And more than 80 years later… it still works.

You see that teepee, the incredible neon, the old gas station architecture and the Route 66 memorabilia and immediately want to pull over.

Inside is exactly what you hope to find on the Mother Road Route 66 signs, shirts, souvenirs, Native American arts and crafts, Tucumcari memorabilia and just about every kind of roadside treasure you can imagine.

But my favorite part is that Tee Pee Curios is still alive.

We’ve seen so many abandoned gas stations, motels and businesses on this journey. This isn’t a recreation of an old Route 66 souvenir shop.

It’s still doing the job Route 66 roadside businesses have done for generations: getting travelers to stop.

So when you drive through Tucumcari, don’t just take the picture outside.

Go in. Meet the people. Buy the sticker. Grab the souvenir.

Supporting places like this is how we make sure the next generation gets to experience Route 66 too.

There is not much that looks cooler at night than old vintage neon. The warm glow harkens back to a time when we made things that were designed with creativity and beauty. I will argue there is little more beautiful on our American roads than the glow of neon in the west at sunset. There is some magic in it. Call it nostalgia or Americana or whatever you want but I just love it. It’s been cool to see more and more of it pop back up on Route 66 the last bunch of years. So much more inviting than bland LED plastic signs. Looking at this images it almost makes me want to get in the car and head west immediately to walk the streets of Tucumcari in the evening or take in the U Drop Inns beauty at night in Shamrock Texas. Kudos to those who save the neon and still create the art today.

So Alive
TeePee Curios @teepeecurios opened in 1944 as a Gulf gas station, garage and grocery store. After the widening of the highway, the front entryway was built, and the place became a curio shop. The iconic neon sign was restored back in 2003. It is known as one of the very last still operating curio shops in New Mexico.

Day 1 was a straight shot from New Orleans to Amarillo. Day 2 was all about the stops: Tucumcari and Albuquerque, NM, then the Petrified Forest in Arizona. Classic Route 66 kitsch along the way — @teepeecurios @roadrunnerlodge , @abq66diner , @petrifiedforestnps (an absolute must), and ending at @eltapatioflag for dinner with an overnight in Needles, CA.

Roadside Attraction Sign Project—Tee Pee Curios, Tucumcari

The New Mexico Route 66 Association is excited to announce a sign in the Roadside Attraction Sign Project has been delivered to Tee Pee Curios, Tucumcari, New Mexico.

Tee Pee Curios is the last remaining original curio shop in New Mexico. The Tee Pee Curios sits directly on Route 66 and offers pottery, jewelry, Route 66 items, T-shirts, books, and more. The building opened as a gas and grocery store in 1944, and housed several different businesses through the years. The gas pumps were lost and the Tee Pee entry was added when Route 66 was widened in the late 50s.
