$The 1962 Singer Vogue Mark II derives from a very interesting chapter in British motoring, combining traditional comfort, elegant styling, and practical engineering within the expanding Rootes Group range. Positioned above the Hillman Super Minx and Singer Gazelle, the Vogue offered a more upmarket interpretation of the medium-sized family car, distinguished by its twin cowled headlamps, prominent chrome grille, sweeping body contours, subtle tailfins, and generous brightwork. Closely related to the Hillman Super Minx, it received its own distinctive detailing and a more luxurious interior, featuring a burred walnut-veneered dashboard and horizontal instrumentation. Announced in August 1962, the Mark II introduced several important revisions over the original Vogue. The front bench seat was replaced by individual front seats, the chrome strip along the bonnet was deleted, and the front indicator lenses changed from white to amber. Additional improvements included twin reversing lamps, two-speed windscreen wipers, a revised headlamp-flasher control, and a repositioned fuel tank to improve luggage capacity. Power came from Rootes’ 1,592 cc overhead-valve inline-four, driving the rear wheels through a manual gearbox. Buyers could specify Laycock overdrive, while the earlier Smiths Easidrive automatic option was replaced by the Borg-Warner 35 transmission. The Vogue was also available as a four-door estate, broadening its appeal to buyers seeking additional practicality without sacrificing its more refined character. The model reflected Rootes’ strategy of marketing closely related vehicles under several marques, including Singer, Hillman, Sunbeam, and Humber, each with its own styling and equipment distinctions. The Vogue continued to evolve through the Mark III and Mark IV, introduced in 1964 and 1965 respectively, before a substantially redesigned Mark V arrived in 1966. • How many made? 20,021 with only a fraction of those surviving and or in original condition • Engine: 1,592 cc OHV inline-four • Debut: August 1962 • Top speed: Approximately 85 mph • 0–60 mph: Approximately 21 seconds • Photo Credit: @teilix • Research: @rarecarsonly$
