COVID started it all for DJ Thexa. What began with secretly downloading FL Studio instead of e-learning eventually led him into music production, DJing, and event organizing.

When people wouldn't play his music, he started playing it himself. When people wouldn't book him, he started organizing his own events.

Sometimes, building your own lane means creating the opportunities you wish someone would give you.

How many people give up when they get rejected instead of finding another way?

BEYOND THE BARBERSHOP: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MEN ARE GIVEN SAFE SPACES TO TALK?

🗣️Sometimes, meaningful change begins with a conversation

A barbershop is more than a place to get a haircut. It can also be a safe space for men to open up about mental health, masculinity, relationships, emotional wellbeing and violence prevention.

Through its #BreakFree Barbershop Talks initiative, the One Economy Foundation created opportunities for men to engage in meaningful conversations about issues that are often difficult to discuss openly.
Implemented between April and August 2026, the initiative reached 91 men through engagements at four barbershops and the Game Changers Barbershop Corner at Independence Stadium.
The discussions highlighted an important message: asking for help is not a sign of weakness. When men are given respectful, non-judgmental spaces to speak, they can reflect on traditional expectations of masculinity, explore healthier ways of expressing emotions and build relationships grounded in respect, communication and accountability.

Key areas highlighted in the thought leadership piece:
1. From Conversation to Meaningful Engagement
2. Why Conversations About Masculinity Must Include Women
3. Taking the Conversation Further: Game Changers
4. Sustaining the Conversation Beyond the Barbershop
5. From Reflection to Action
