RAKEL & TEKLA BERGMAN FRÖBERG

Rakel and Tekla are twins and have always created together, ever since they were little.

“Our hands become each other’s. We see, choose and place — almost like a spell.”

For three weeks, they have taken over Syntropia Art Space as their studio, through the residency by Mothers in Residence.
They have pushed prams, drawn, built, cut, filmed and created a number of large-scale sculptures together.

”Four arms reach further than two.

Sometimes we crawl inside the sculptures, hold our hands against our hearts and gather strength. For a moment, we become the sculpture, and then we become ourselves again.

We carry what has been, what is, and perhaps also what has not yet happened.”

Come inside the studio during Gothenburg Culture Festival and see what has taken shape.

Tekla & Rakel Bergman Fröberg exhibition is opening
27th of august with pieces made at the summer residence organised by Mothers in Residence

”Material is no longer simply what it used to be. You have to think beyond what things normally are.

There is something playful about it — a kind of game between the materials, balance and ourselves.

It is almost like: now it’s a sculpture, now it’s a chair, now it’s a table.

We think of it as a kind of monument, where the objects become building blocks in a story, their meaning changing depending on where they are placed and what they are placed alongside.

- What do the prams mean to you?

When you pushed a pram for the first time, you were careful not to wake anyone. An empty pram can create a sense of unease. They carry many meanings — both safety and fear.

Everything circulates.

Some things we take out of the rubbish rooms. There is something enjoyable about being the person who fixes everything, who picks things up and gives them another life.

It also becomes a little like an obsession.”
