connection is the most valuable tool you can have in your toolbox & here's why:

connection forms a bond
a bond builds trust
trust creates a sense of safety
safety supports the nervous system
a calm nervous system allows you to relax
when you are relaxed you are more present
when you are present nothing else matters

if you want photos that evoke a feeling even a stranger can feel when looking at them, you get to be connected to what & who you are photographing

this is why connection is literally the foundation of everything i create because without it, you're just taking pictures.

*big breath*

Trying to make heads or tails of this year in a bite-sized, instagrammable package feels overwhelming.

So why do it?

It feels important, I suppose. For me, and the little online scrapbook I’m keeping of my life, but also for whoever else needs the affirmation that it can all be good AND bad, happy AND sad, sobbing on the Amtrak after nailing an audition, crying in the costume shop before going on for your silly little ninny noodle show, weeping into a friend’s arms and then watching drag race together, both and both and both and.

I cried and wept and broke this year and was also held and loved and cared for. I watched dreams for my future shatter before me while other dreams came true before my eyes. It was joy and sorrow, it was the weeping and smiling theatre masks, it was two sides of the same coin, it was WHIPLASH, it was life.

Nothing got smaller. My container - my capacity to hold it all - got bigger. That’s the takeaway. It’s not trying to outweigh one side or the other. It’s learning to hold it all at once. I can’t claim to have become a pro at it, but I can say I’ve had a LOT of practice this year.

(Frankly, I could use less in 2026.)

But while the grief still comes with me, so does everything else. What I’ve learned about myself, the life I’ve consciously rebuilt, the choosing of myself over and over and over again.

And most importantly - the love.

My life is overflowing with love!!! From and for myself, my community, my family, my job.

In the way people made me home cooked meals and let me cry on the dressing room floor in between shows. The way my sister text me everyday to make sure I was drinking water and eating lunch. The way my mom sent me a happy animal gif every morning and my dad flew across the country just to drive back across it with me. The way my students were unknowingly often the thing keeping me going during the day. The way I got a small part of myself back telling Julie Jordan’s story. The way I’ve kept going, step by step, day by day, until I remembered and relearned how to find my joy.

It’s all love. It’s bursting at the seams.

And for 2026 I look around and say: more of this please. ❤️‍🩹✨
