Dzidefo Amegatsey: From Dzodze to Tokyo, A Young Ghanaian Artist Making His Mark

Art knows no boundaries. For Dzidefo Amegatsey, a young Ghanaian artist from Dzodze in the Ketu North Constituency of the Volta Region, creativity has been a lifelong journey—one that has taken him from drawing on walls as a child to exhibiting his work on an international platform in Tokyo, Japan.

Dzidefo’s artistic journey began at a very young age. While growing up, he would use chalk, charcoal and virtually any material capable of leaving an imprint to create drawings on walls and other available surfaces. What began as childhood creativity gradually developed into a clear passion for the arts.

After his elementary education at Mawuli School Complex, Dzidefo proceeded to Awudome Senior High School, where he pursued Visual Arts. Despite coming from a humble background, he remained determined to build a career around his passion.

In 2018, he gained admission to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to study Fine Arts. Four years later, in 2022, he graduated with First Class honours, earning the admiration of lecturers and colleagues for his dedication, enthusiasm and willingness to support others within the department.

During his undergraduate years, Dzidefo further distinguished himself through an eight-week art residency @dot.ateliers in Osu, Accra, founded by renowned Ghanaian artist @amoakoboafo . During the residency, he developed a compelling body of work exploring decomposition, decay and the effects of time on objects and existence. His work received recognition from the residency and further affirmed his potential as an emerging artist.

Dzidefo continued to expand his artistic and academic horizons by pursuing a Master’s degree at KNUST, during which he also participated in a six-month exchange programme at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, Germany. The international experience provided an opportunity to deepen his artistic practice, broaden his intellectual perspective and further develop his skills.

Today, Dzidefo’s artistic journey has reached another significant milestone.

More than ten of his artworks are currently being ex
