I want to share a pivotal moment in my health journey that unfolded unexpectedly 🖤🤍 During a routine follow-up for my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, I caught a glimpse of my clinic letter on the screen that said ‘Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome’ 💡 With only a vague understanding from the awareness that my university friend @noughttosee spreads, I questioned my specialist, and to my shock, I was diagnosed right then and there.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The flood of emotions overwhelmed me as yet another diagnosis was added to my already lengthy list 😔. But in that moment of vulnerability, my consultant’s compassion and expertise shone through. He conducted a thorough ‘hypermobility assessment’, confirming hEDS, and unveiled a comprehensive explanation of how it tied into my medical history. Suddenly, years of confusion, as to how one person could possibly have so many conditions, dissipated as the puzzle pieces fell into place 🧩

Grateful doesn’t begin to cover it – to my consultant, who not only unraveled the mysteries of my health but continues to guide me through this journey with care and expertise. Standing there, watching my face on the big screen at Piccadilly Circus, I was so grateful but I couldn’t not be reminded of the countless souls silently battling with symptoms that evade diagnosis for years… I was even diagnosed by accident 💔

Ehlers Danlos Syndrome isn’t just a condition; it’s a labyrinth of symptoms that can go unnoticed or misdiagnosed, leading to years of uncertainty and anguish 💭 My heart goes out to those still navigating this maze, searching for answers in a medical system that often falls short.

Existential dread is that experience of when your life is feeling heavy.

You’re lacking motivation.

Feeling confused about life.

Disconnected from yourself and others.

And just fed up with trying.

You might also notice some depressive symptoms such as loss of joy, hopelessness, inattention, and change in appetite and sleep hygiene.

When you’re experiencing dread associated with the responsibility of being human these are four things to keep in mind:

🍒Stop taking life so seriously! Life is stressful enough as it is. No use spending useless energy on sweating the small stuff. Try to make light of situations, maintain optimism, and search for gratitude in all of life’s moments.

🍒Grab your paint brush. It’s time to put that energy to good use through creative expression. Consider activities that you can get immersed in: knitting a scarf, spinning pottery on the wheel, or scribbling in a notebook. It can be fun to color outside the lines 🥰

🍒Connect connect connect! Whether that be with friends, family, your partner(s), yourself, in nature, with a book, during a movie, etc. What environments make you feel the most aligned, authentic, and alive?

🍒Laugh at life. Our time in this physical realm is limited. Stealing moments of laughter throughout the day is part of creating meaning and being mindfully attuned.

A week till Christmas and our ‘Super Flexible Not Superhuman’ campaign to raise awareness for #EDS is gaining traction. This included an amazing live performance of @temple.sovnd charity Christmas single at the bright Piccadilly Light in London. You can stream and download the single “Never Be Mine This Christmas Time” on all major platforms.

The campaign puts a spotlight on the symptoms of #EDS, including joint hypermobility and skin hyperextensibility – the two are common to all 13 tissue connectivity disorders. The campaign aims to raise awareness of EDS, and help sufferers get diagnosed.

The project began with an email to WMH&I from music production duo TEM-PLE, aka Suzette and Aurora Partridge. In it, Aurora explained how she had recently received an EDS diagnosis – 10 years after she first began seeking medical advice about the daily pain she experienced.
