I'm delighted to share that the Norwegian composer and musician Tellef Øgrim and I have contributed an article on free improvisation to Tempo Magazine. Our article, “Why Free Improvisation Doesn't Seem to Fit Music History—and Why That Matters,” is featured in the third issue of Tempo following its new chapter with Wolke Verlag Berlin, offering a fresh perspective on the relationship between free improvisation and the Western musical tradition.

It’s an unbelievable privilege to share my first academic publication - with the absolutely fantastic @temponewmusic @wolke_verlag - exploring metamodern aesthetics in the works of @__nobuto__ and @oliver_leith ⚡️ This is a paper that’s been a couple years in the making now, since I first drafted it for my MA Opera Making and Writing at @guildhallschool. Huge huge shout outs to @wilson_sj for your invaluable guidance throughout my year at Guildhall and the process of drafting this paper; to Greg Dember and Linda Ceriello of @what_is_metamodern for their encouragement into MM research; to @mrttrml for being a wonderful colleague, collaborator, and putting up with my crazy ideas; to @fantasticdrfox @annamheslop for all of your help throughout the editing process; to all the amazing folks who proofread versions of this (there are so so many of you ha); to all the composers whose music I featured (you’re all AMAZING); and to everyone whose put up with me when I’ve not shut up about these ideas 💕 Have a read now in Issue 317 of Tempo - would love to hear your thoughts ✨
