The first time I visited my grandmother's house in DR, the house my dad grew up in, I was surprised to find a photo of her and I from my sweet sixteen on the bottom shelf of a rattan TV stand in the living room. A photo she had herself placed many years ago was still there welcoming me into her home after she passed.

The feeling of being thought of, cared about, prayed for, when you're not there is one of the many gifts of grandmothers. I was profoundly touched by this time-travel greeting.

This Friday 12/5 we will host a closing reception for En la casa de Mamá at Carlson Tower Gallery, 5-8pm. Otherwise please go see the show anytime M-F 9 am - 9 pm until 12/12.

Thank you to Emily Lindskoog for the invitation and support, to the students of North Park University for their generous curiosity, to Erin Turney for documenting, to Asher who really inspires me to take creative risks, to my dearest ones who show up and hype me up, and to my family both living and departed whose strength, love, and compassion continue to guide me.

I am proud to be able to share my grandmother with all of you through this show. I hope you'll tell me about your grandmother soon. If your grandmother is still alive, send her a little extra love for me.

Some Bunny is 4 today…..🥹🖤
It is one thing for a dog to be “well-liked,” but it is another thing entirely to be the guest of honor every time a friend walks through the door. The way you all love on Bunny has turned her life into a series of high-stakes reunions and precious moments. Because you treat her like a best friend rather than just a pet, she has developed this hilarious, joyful personality where she expects—and gives—nothing but total devotion. She doesn’t just feel “owned”; I think she feels seen, understood, and profoundly adored. She’s the greatest companion I’ve ever known, and I thank you for being part of her life. xxxxxxx

8 Years of Hanahana Beauty. WOW. I can’t believe I’m writing this. Swipe down memory lane

10 years ago, I was teaching 7th grade Algebra and mentoring a group of 12 ninth graders—never imagining that my experimenting of whipping up shea butter in my kitchen (because Chicago winters had me ASHY 😩) would turn into Hanahana Beauty.

Fast forward 8 years into this business, and let me tell you—it’s been a wild, hard, beautiful growth journey. There were moments I questioned everything, moments I celebrated big wins, and through it all, I kept growing.

Im so for the community that we have built! With yall we wouldn’t be here truly!! Thank you to every person that has ever shared, purchased, gifted someone our products, packed a boxed, stoped by hq to cowork and attended our activations!

At first, my motivation was impact and passion (with a little ego and fear in the mix, if I’m being honest), but today, my purpose is clearer than ever. I am not Hanahana Beauty; the impact of Hanahana Beauty is bigger than just me—but it also needs me. And that’s a powerful lesson.

The WILD YAMS are feeling very inspired after our visit to the Joan Flasch Artists' Book Collection + Archive at SAIC yesterday!

This amazing collection holds over 13,000 books, zines, and other objects—we primarily looked at books from the collection by Black women (including works by @therealkristaf and @woodsadie ) and others, and discussed libraries and archives. We took a photo holding some of our favorite books. 🥹📚✨

This collection is open to the public and is best accessed by making an appointment by emailing JFABC@saic.edu
