Throughlines is a monthly program that gives voice and visibility to marginalized filmmakers who have made works that often exist outside of the white Western canon.

For this first edition, Robert-Jonathan Koeyers will be sharing a film that has played a significant role in his development as a Black artist, filmmaker, and teacher.

Film: An Oversimplification of Her Beauty (2012) by Terence Nance.

Robert-Jonathan: “Although Terence Nance’s short films have been incredibly influential to me as a Black filmmaker, I’ve only recently watched his first big film, An Oversimplification of Her Beauty. I found myself being immediately struck by the level of boldness, originality, and self-reflection (sometimes to a fault) that he was able to show. By no means would I call this a perfect film, but by combining fiction, documentary, and animation, you can feel his strong vision and eagerness to tell this story. Throughout the years Nance’s works have taught me that, despite the little means you might have, it’s important to continue looking for beauty and softness in places you hadn’t considered looking before. You never know what you might find.”

Procrastinating can u tell ✌️Had a blast going through all my fave sounds in the world - highly recommend this exercise. Currently in the middle of an existential crisis so this was especially fun to reflect on.

Obvs quite rock and pop-leaning 😌🤘 I deeply love all these albums and there’s about another 80 albums in a secondary list that either got moved off this list or were very seriously considered 😭 (i wanted to include genre notes just for my own reference but i agree genre is irrelevant etc etcccc also the way i chose which subgenres to include was so inconsistent lol)

Welcome back to JUNKTURE Magazine’s “Song of the Week.”
This week’s track is “Infinince or Infinity?” by the brilliant director, writer, actor, and musician, @terenceetc.
Terence Etc. - or Terence Nance as he’s known offstage - wears many hats as the creator of Peabody-award winning HBO program “Random Acts of Flyness” and the director of the critically-acclaimed indie film, “An Oversimplification of Her Beauty,” but today, we’re more focused on his less-renowned but equally remarkable musical endeavours.
Like all of Terence’s pursuits, “Infinince or Infinity? is a really thoughtful, beautiful examination of love, beginning as a melancholic ballad before shifting into dance-funk territory near the end. Complemented by light harp plucks, a horn arrangement, and an underlying bass, “Infinince or Infinity?” has quickly become one of the most captivating and dynamic songs we’ve come across recently.
If you haven’t heard “Infinince or Infinity?” or experienced the rest of Terence’s creative projects, we highly recommend!

When I decided I was going to seriously move into content, This was the first shoot I participated in. @terenceetc was directing a short film for @pharoahemonch on the coldest day ever and they let me shoot behind the scenes.

I had been getting tutored by Shawn and he patiently taught me some game...✨🙏🏽✨

Today I called @shawnpeezie to drop some good news on him... he replied “if you‘re gonna count somebody out, it better not be Ali Muhammad... ‘cause he always finds a way.”

That shit almost made me tear up.

I appreciate you brother!!

Bonus slide: @blitzambassador popped out to kick it that day as well...he was smart tho, he showed up when we shot indoors at @naeemdouglas_ crib.
