In celebration of Bermuda Art Month, Black Pony Gallery proudly highlights six talented Bermudian artists: ABWilson @abwilsonphotography, Teresa Kirby Smith @teresakirbysmith, James Cooper @jamesjamescooper, Graham Foster @grahamfosterart, Meredith Andrews @meredithphoto and Charles Zuill.

Their works are currently on view at the @cambridgebeaches Hotel, offering visitors and guests a unique opportunity to experience the depth and diversity of Bermuda’s contemporary art scene.

In addition, Charles Zuill’s solo exhibition is on display at @masterworksmuseum of Bermuda Art, a must-see highlight of the season. If you’re participating in the Art Month Passport program, be sure to stop by Masterworks to get your passport stamped while enjoying Zuill’s exhibition.

[Teresa Kirby Smith - Bermuda]

Grateful to have @teresakirbysmith with us again this year!

Teresa Kirby Smith was born in Peru and raised in Chile, Panama and Argentina. She studied at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York, and received an MA in Photography and Fine Arts Administration from New York University. Her photography can be neatly split into two discrete categories: black-and-white film shot exclusively at night and later developed and printed in her studio; and, abstract color imagery created during daylight hours using a digital camera. Her work has been shown in Bermuda and the United States, and has appeared in online exhibitions. She was the recipient of the 2013 Charman Grand Prize at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, and has been a participant in the Bermuda National Gallery Biennial exhibitions in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018.

Teresa Kirby Smith is a Peruvian-born, Bermuda-based artist whose abstract photography has been presented in both the US and in various prestigious Bermuda shows, including the recent 2023 Charman Prize Exhibition and several Bermuda National Gallery Biennial Exhibitions. In this latest series for Artsy’s online FOUNDATIONS Art Fair, Kirby Smith has presented a series of 3 superimposed, abstract photographic renditions of the Tate Modern Museum of Art - taken during a recent trip to London.

In his critical essay of Black Pony Gallery’s presentation in FOUNDATIONS, art curator, anthropologist @jamesoscarjr discusses Teresa Kirby Smith’s abstract photography series: “[Smith] explores translucence and transposition, creating playful chromatic imagery that recomplicates the history and architectural presence of the Empire’s erstwhile art institution—the Tate. Her works seek to see inside the matrixial outer shell of the Tate, imposing a transposition that allows a distance from the institutional monolith, rendering it a myth, real, ideal, and surreal simultaneously.”

Based in Bermuda, Teresa Kirby Smith is an artist whose portfolio consists of abstract, digital photographs of scenery and flora. She has exhibited at the Bermuda National Gallery and Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art. Presently, she has six artworks on display (for sale) in the gallery’s new space at Cambridge Beaches Hotel in Bermuda.

In the upcoming months, Teresa is looking forward to continuing her work on her Tropical Bermuda series, which “consists of colour abstracts of Bermuda’s tropical flowers and trees” and she will be participating in the 2023 Masterworks Charman Prize exhibition. Additionally, Teresa is proud to be featured in the no.33 Spring edition of Spotlight Magazine, published by the Circle Foundation of the Arts. She is also working on three new projects, stating:

“The first concerns shooting black and white images on medium format film with a Holga plastic camera. The second project involves shooting black and white medium format film with a pinhole camera. And finally, still in the early stages, is a series of images printed on duratrans film, the intention being to illuminate the prints by inserting them in light boxes.”

Art Alert 🚨 I was finally able to visit the Black Pony Gallery show celebrating local & Atlantic World artists at Cambridge Beaches, Bermuda. The gallery’s first exhibition features original paintings and limited-edition prints by five Bermudian artists including myself, James Cooper, Graham Foster, Teresa Kirby Smith, and Charles Zuill, as well as work from Cayman artist, Nasaria Chollette, and Cuban artist, Osmeivy Ortega.

“For Teresa Kirby Smith, the landscape provides the ideal setting to experiment with photography. I quite like thinking about her art-making process. The works appear to be digital constructs when in fact she is an ardent traditionalist when it comes to process.” BPG Lisa Howie

Kirby Smith says, “These color-saturated photos of flora found in Bermuda are from an ongoing series called Tropical Abstracts. They are all single exposures, but using a hand-held optical device in conjunction with my camera. I've aimed to create images that are lush, layered and densely textured.”

Lisa continues, "I imagine Teresa in her garden balancing an object in one hand while peering through it and her lens held by the other. A balancing act and a very, very steady hand to construct her photographs.”
