It sounds trite to say that UTMB didn't turn out how planned, but nevertheless, I could not have predicted that the race was going to unfold the way it did. If you told me that I was going to end up running 60+ miles with my good friend and training partner, Pollee, I would have said that's cray cray. But alas, that is what happened and it made for one of the most special race experiences of my career and one that I will never forget. Pollee made the pain cave a bearable place to reside. Thank you, @polleejeanne, for the best worst day ever ❤️

To be taken care of by the most amazing, loving, capable women touches my heart beyond what words can express. They took their roles so seriously and nailed every aspect of crewing and support. I'm grateful for @watrailrunner back in his usual role, staying up all night back home to do the takeover. He is still the one I call at 2 in the morning when I'm bleeding and crying.

There was a lot that didn't go right. Leaving Courmayeur, I had a plantar fasciitis flare-up that had me stopping and stretching until the climb to Bertone. Once that calmed down, I could feel the fatigue in my quads. To have trashed quads with 60 miles left of racing was scary and elicited a whole lot of uncertainty that I never had to navigate before. My period started the day after the race so I had a lot of GI distress during the race that manifested as a bathroom stop at every aid station. Both of my lights burned out on the final climb and I fell hard on the final descent.

I never considered dropping, but it felt impossible and I couldn't wrap my head around how I could get to the finish line feeling like I was. I'm so grateful for @trish051525 who reassured me at Champex Lac and then every step on the way to the finish that it was indeed possible.

I know in the throes of the race I said I was done, that I would never do this again. But honestly, I find myself thinking about what I could do with this new belief of what I am able to push through. I have an entry into UTMB for 2027 from running Lavaredo this year and need to decide what to do with it. I'm still processing and thinking it through as my body and mind recovers.

I don't know if you're ever really 100% ready for something like UTMB, but I know I put in 100% of what my body and mind was capable of in this short training block post Lavaredo. Time to rest up, pack up and dream up what's possible.
