Man Ray has been a reference point for me for a long time. He was willing to contradict himself, keep experimenting, and question what an image could be. Tomorrow I shall contradict myself puts our work in conversation across generations, and it asks us to look again at what we think we see.

Join @hankwillisthomas as he reflects on ‘Tomorrow I Shall Contradict Myself’, his exhibitions at Galleria Continua in San Gimignano and Rome, in dialogue with Man Ray.

Speaking of the “kinship of the soul” that connects their practices, Thomas explores freedom and its contradictions, the multiple meanings within a simple gesture, and images revealed through movement or a camera flash. An invitation to discover the beauty and wonder in what we might otherwise overlook.

‘Afterimage’ @hankwillisthomas on view at GALLERIA CONTINUA / Paris Matignon.

Working across photography, sculpture, screen printing, installation, and video, Thomas interweaves historical references with potent symbols drawn from visual culture.
His practice interrogates how historical narratives are constructed and challenges established modes of representation, drawing attention to the shifting, layered nature of historical meaning. Rather than treating history as fixed, Thomas approaches it as an ongoing construct, one continually reshaped and rewritten, exposing the ways in which dominant power structures have distorted historical narratives to serve their own ends.

Over the last ten years, Thomas has mastered the retroreflective medium, creating mixed media works that reveal two distinct scenes transfigured by both ambient and flash lighting, each emerging depending on the viewer’s position and the surrounding light.
For these recent retroreflective works, shown in Paris for the first time, Thomas draws on major reference points in art history, including Seydou Keïta, Surrealism, and Henri Matisse.

Hank Willis Thomas ‘Afterimage’ is on view at GALLERIA CONTINUA / Paris Matignon until 28 November.

Born in 1976 and based in Brooklyn, Hank Willis Thomas is a conceptual artist whose work explores perspective, identity, commodity, media and popular culture.
‘Mode au Congo (Ady Fidelin)’ Mode au Congo (Ady Fidelin) takes as its point of departure a photograph by Man Ray from his 1937 series La mode au Congo, in which Adrienne « Ady » Fidelin posed wearing Congolese headdresses. One of these photographs appeared in Harper’s Bazaar in September 1937, making Fidelin the first Black model to be featured in a major American fashion magazine(...) Thomas’ choice of the retroflective technique continues to add layers of meaning: here, the shift of the medium allows Fidelin’s image to surface and recede according to where the viewer stands, as though her visibility were being reinvented each time someone looks. This imbalance becomes the subject itself: Fidelin’s picture is held in a material that asks to be looked at twice, so that recognition, once withheld, might finally arrive.

Discover it during our late-night opening on Monday 19 October, from 5 to 9 pm, as part of MaSH, the opening night taking place during Paris Art Week 2026. That evening, 38 galleries in the Matignon Saint-Honoré district open their doors together. The street is closed to traffic and two outdoor performances, by Mathieu Forget and Amélie Caussade, take place at either end of avenue Matignon.

Now on view in San Gimignano: ‘Tomorrow I shall contradict myself’ by Hank Willis Thomas & Man Ray.

Taking its title from Man Ray’s embrace of contradiction, the exhibition invites us to reconsider what we see and how we see it. Thomas’s exploration of identity, representation and collective action meets the experimental spirit of an artist who has long been a reference for his practice, opening a conversation across generations about the possibilities of the image. As perspectives shift and familiar forms take on new meanings, looking becomes an active process of discovery and questioning.

The presentation unfolds alongside the exhibition at Galleria Continua / Roma, organised in collaboration with @territorio.works.

Every time I called my grandmother Ruth, she would answer the phone by saying:

“This is the day the Lord has made;
We will rejoice and be glad in it.”

She loved her book of Psalms 📕 .
And lived by this verse for over a century.
She passed away a few years ago, but every time I think of her I am in awe. People don’t understand what it means for a life-long poor person to live to be old, black, happy and beloved. Wealth cannot be counted in numbers. It is a feeling that was crystallized most for me when @therealswizzz said tom me.

“It’s not all about the money! community is currency!“

I made this sculpture and named it community a couple of years later. It is amazing to see it 8ft tall in bronze @galleriacontinua . I feel my community growing. Much love @your.art.boo for the epic 📷!

Now Open: Hank Willis Thomas & Man Ray in Rome

GALLERIA CONTINUA / Roma is pleased to present ‘Tomorrow I Shall Contradict Myself’, organised in collaboration with @territorio.works . Bringing Hank Willis Thomas’s work into dialogue with Man Ray, a longstanding point of reference for his practice, the exhibition explores the image as a space for experimentation, transformation and questioning.

From Man Ray’s radical investigations of light and perception to Thomas’s exploration of identity, representation and collective action, the works invite us to look beyond the familiar and reconsider how images shape our understanding of the world.

The exhibition marks the beginning of Galleria Continua’s collaboration with Hank Willis Thomas, alongside a parallel presentation in San Gimignano.

Opening this evening: 'Afterimage' by Hank Willis Thomas at GALLERIA CONTINUA / Paris Matignon.

The show inaugurates the gallery’s collaboration with the acclaimed American artist, marking his return to Paris for the first time in nearly twenty years. Themes central to the Paris solo presentation are further explored in two concurrent exhibitions that examine Thomas’s and Man Ray’s legacies across GALLERIA CONTINUA’s spaces in Paris, San Gimignano, and Rome, offering a multifaceted view of the artist’s’ practice. The Paris presentation focuses on his recent sculptures and retroreflective works.

This September @hankwillisthomas opens across three of the gallery’s locations: Paris Matignon, Rome and San Gimignano.

First in Paris, 'Afterimage' by Hank Willis Thomas opens on 17 September at GALLERIA CONTINUA / Paris Matignon. The following week, 'Tomorrow I shall contradict myself.' opens on 25 September in Rome and 26 September in San Gimignano, bringing Thomas into dialogue with Man Ray for the first time. Across photography, sculpture, installation and other media, Thomas examines how images, gestures and histories shape perception, collective memory and systems of representation.

Opening 25 September at Galleria Continua / Roma and 26 September at Galleria Continua / San Gimignano: 'Tomorrow I shall contradict myself.'

Bringing together Man Ray and Hank Willis Thomas for the first time, the exhibition unfolds as a thematic, multi-media dialogue between two singular voices whose practices challenge perception, authorship, and the politics of representation.

The year 2026 marks a rare and meaningful convergence: the 50th anniversary of Man Ray’s death and the 50th birthday of Hank Willis Thomas. Taking its title from Man Ray’s words, “Tomorrow I shall contradict myself,” the exhibition reflects on contradiction as a space of freedom, experimentation, and transformation.

A pioneer of Surrealist photography, Man Ray expanded the possibilities of image-making through chance, humour, and formal audacity. Half a century later, Hank Willis Thomas carries this spirit forward through a conceptual practice that recontextualizes images, gestures, and histories, questioning how meaning is shaped, seen, and remembered. Conceived in a spirit of experimentation, intellectual curiosity, and collaboration, 'Tomorrow I shall contradict myself.' marks the first presentation of both artists at Galleria Continua.
