Yesterday marked eight years since I almost died in a boating accident.

Every year leading up to this day, I feel it in my body before I even think it through. A kind of quiet dread, like something is coming that I should be able to stop, even though it’s already happened. It’s strange how trauma stays in the body like that.

Eight years later, it’s still one of the best and worst things that’s ever happened to me.

Of course I wish it never happened. I wish I didn’t go through it. But what it gave me is impossible to ignore. It taught me resilience in a way nothing else could. It gave me a deep, daily gratitude just for being alive, for being able to use my hands, for all the small things that used to go unnoticed. The growth that came from it changed me in ways I can’t even fully put into words.

So much good came from something so traumatic.

And still… it’s not simple.

Tonight, as I was putting Cecil to sleep, rubbing his back the way he likes, he reminded me of that in the smallest, sweetest way. When my left hand got tired and I switched to my right, he said, “No mommy, otro mano, con los dedos.” He wants the other hand, the one that can actually rub his back the way he wants with pressure.

It was cute. It made me smile.

And it also made me sad.

If I’m being completely honest, there’s still a part of this that makes me sad. Even after all this time. Even with all the gratitude. There are things that are harder. Things that take longer. Things I just can’t do the way I wish I could. Like scratching my son’s back the way he wants.

And at the same time, I know how lucky I am. I’m here. I made it. I get to be his mom. I get to live this life that I almost didn’t have.

So today, the overwhelming feeling is gratitude.

But it’s not the only feeling.

There’s gratitude, and there’s sadness. There’s pride, and there’s frustration. There’s joy in how far I’ve come, and there’s still a quiet grief for what was lost.

Both are true at the same time.

And I think it’s worth saying that out loud.

I’m so happy to be here. I’m so grateful for this life.

And some days, even eight years later, it’s still hard.

Capturing that integrity of effort, and that honesty and authenticity in that heavy, labored, ACCOMPLISHED breathing, is something that has always given me goosebumps!

There is a vulnerability and a true #humility that comes with giving EVERY ounce that you have to give.

I have always believed that to be one of the coolest, sort of, counter intuitive truths about the best of the best!!

In their expression of GREATNESS and confidence, the GREATS are actually being vulnerable and attacking the things that can evoke the most fear! Failure. NOT being able to finish. NOT being the best.

To push beyond where we THINK we can go, to have that kind of courage, even on an airdyne bike or attempting a personal best trap bar squat or a timed mile run…is LITERALLY the definition of courage.

And it is so cool that a random Thursday night or Monday morning in the gym can be the setting for that!

Like I said…GOOSEBUMPS🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
