Troy Peerless Lofts, 2008

I was at the very beginning of my curatorial journey when developers began inviting me to create art experiences within their properties. In those early years, particularly 2008 and 2009, I curated a number of exhibitions and events for Atlanta developers.

The first was at Grinnell Lofts in Inman Park, followed by several others, including this progressive exhibition across multiple lofts and shared spaces at Troy Peerless Lofts on Glen Iris for Miller-Gallmann. They understood that art could do something special: activate spaces, bring people together, and create memorable experiences that allowed people to see a property in an entirely new way. They later invited me to establish a gallery in Castleberry Hill.

While I don’t have photographs saved from all of these early events, I’m grateful that Terry Kearns documented this one on his Architecture Tourist blog. Looking back, these projects were some of my earliest explorations of what we now often call placemaking: the intersection of art, community, and the built environment.

Part 2: Art, placemaking, and the spaces that shaped my journey in Atlanta.

🌳 Welcome to 1405 Cornell Road 🌳

While much of this residence remains true to its original 1925 design, the homeowners purchased this home in 2021 and spent the following year completing a comprehensive renovation.

Nearly every surface in the house required refinishing—some walls featured a dated popcorn texture. The kitchen and bathrooms were taken down to the framing. One especially charming feature is the dining nook, thoughtfully carved from the original pantry space beneath the stairs.

A new family room was intentionally designed to maximize its connection to the garden, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience. The owners are passionate gardeners. They have thoughtfully transformed the landscape—installing raised garden beds where the garage once stood and fully reimagining the grounds. The couple is especially proud of their collection of rose bushes, which climb gracefully along trellises and fences.

Pre-departure farewell selfie. I couldn’t see a thing in the direct sun, so I just took several shots and hoped something would turn out. This was the only one that captured the entire #TerryTee, so I’ll accept looking awkward. 😂 #foreveriloveatlanta

Gentle Works Architect Clay Kiningham illustrated our friend Gene Kansas’ new book Civil Sights, and today you can catch them both as they discuss Civil Sights and more, during a live taping of Redesigning Cities Episode 52 - Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn: Preserving the Spaces & Stories of the Civil Rights Movement, hosted by another friend of ours: Ellen-Dunham Jones. 💫

More on the episode via Redesigning Cities:

How did the neighborhood of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s childhood shape his views and the larger Civil Rights Movement? How do today’s efforts at cultural and historic preservation inspire social change? In his new book, Civil Sights, developer Gene Kansas walks us through Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn Historic District and tells the stories of the Civil Rights Movement through its buildings’ occupants and achievements. After his presentation Clay Kiningham (illustrator of the book), Jacqueline Royster, William J. Stanley III, and Ellen Dunham-Jones will discuss the lessons for designers, developers, and activists.

Scan the QR codes to register to join either at GA Tech or live on zoom, today from 5:30 - 7:00PM ET.

Reception and book signing to follow the in-person discussion. 📖

If you can’t tune in today, listen later via the Redesigning Cities podcast. 🎧
