If you are traveling through Denver International Airport in the coming months, take the opportunity to see Robischon Gallery artist Terry Maker’s recently completed installation featuring her acclaimed western hat series.  On view now at DIA on Concourse B near Gate B62, enjoy the artist’s impressive Cowgirl Hat Ball, which measures 10 feet in diameter and is constructed from more than 500 Western-style straw hats. Located nearby, is Maker’s Cowgirl Hat 2, a witty companion sculpture composed of 175 miniature hats.

The monumental spherical sculptures celebrate the visual language of the American West while smartly challenging conventional gender associations embedded within its iconography. Through accumulation and inversion of the familiar cowboy hat—turning the crown inward and elevating the oval brim—Maker reimagines a deeply recognizable cultural symbol, offering a nuanced reconsideration of gendered hierarchies within Western art and culture.

Richly textured, visually intriguing and wonderfully unexpected, Terry Maker’s installation is presented as part of Denver International Airport’s rotating sculpture program.

Artist Terry Maker was recently acknowledged with an extensive feature in The Denver Post, by writer Ray Mark Rinaldi lauding her current solo exhibition "Traces" at Robischon Gallery. Throughout her decades of creating sculptural amalgamations and works on paper, Maker’s investigation is prompted by human psychology, material exploration, and scientific discovery. Invoking the vastness of the celestial merged with the familiarity of every-day life, Maker uses the circle as a conceptual building block in her far-reaching dynamic explorations. The dualism of the circle vacillates between the commonplace and the cosmic, allowing Maker to invite her audience to consider universal tensions and existential questions.

“I have spent a lifetime considering the phenomenon of making in all its forms and at all scales, beginning with the cosmic and going all the way down to the microscopic level at which things are just as seething with life as they are in a galactic nursery.” - Terry Maker

Terry Maker’s solo exhibition “Traces” is currently on view at Robischon Gallery, alongside the solo exhibitions of three equally engaging artists, Barbara Takenaga, Linda Fleming, and Ana Maria Hernando.
