Before the day is over, I’d like to share details about our special plans for the Colegio Jacinto Treviño historical marker unveiling on Saturday, October 17, 2026. We have invited the tremendously talented Danzantes of the ROCA-Revival of Cultural Arts. If you’ve never seen a Danza Azteca performance, you’re in for a history lesson in tradición! To honor the Colegio leaders and students, and their pursuit of educational self-determination rooted in the cultural nationalism of Chicanismo and Indigenismo, we plan to open the day with a Danza blessing at the historical marker unveiling. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 236 S Missouri Ave, Mercedes, Texas, 78570, from 9-10 a.m.

🎉10+ YEARS IN THE MAKING… BURTON IS GETTING A NEW WELCOME! For more than 10 years, the Burton Chamber of Commerce has been working toward a dream: a beautiful monument sign along Highway 290 that welcomes travelers to Burton and lets them know they’ve arrived somewhere worth discovering. And that dream is becoming a reality. 🙌 Destination Burton could not be more excited! This is so much more than a sign. It’s a WELCOME. It’s an invitation to turn off Highway 290, slow down, explore our little town, meet our people, shop our businesses, experience our history—and maybe stay awhile. We are incredibly grateful to the Burton Chamber of Commerce and everyone who has worked, planned, dreamed and persevered for more than a decade to make this happen. 👏👏👏 We’re cheering you on, Burton Chamber! Burton, Texas — STAY TUNED FOR THE FINISHED MONUMENT ❤️ #DestinationBurton #BurtonTexas #VisitBurtonTX #SmallTownTexas #RuralTourism

🏆 2026 Duda Awards – Grand Prize Winner 🏆 To God be the glory — we did it! 🙌🏾 The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum has been awarded the $100,000 Grand Prize at the 2026 Michael C. Duda Preservation Awards, and I am overwhelmed with gratitude. This recognition is so much bigger than an award. It’s a testament to every person who has believed in this mission, prayed over this building, and refused to let this story go untold. These funds will help us cross the finish line as we prepare to reopen with six immersive galleries telling African American military history right here in Texas. The legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers deserves nothing less. Like I said before we coming for it ALL! 💯 #BuffaloSoldiers #TexasHistory #AfricanAmericanHistory #HistoricPreservation DudaAwards ReadyAndForward

The Kusch House at Hemisfair has been awarded 2nd place in the 2026 Michael C. Duda Preservation Awards, and we are incredibly grateful for this recognition by the Texas Historical Foundation! Originally built in 1885 by stonemason John Kusch, this Gothic Revival home has been part of San Antonio’s story for generations, including its time as “La Fonda Santa Anita” during HemisFair ‘68. The Hemisfair District is home to 23 historic buildings designated as State Antiquities Landmarks, including structures from the 1968 World’s Fair and many others dating back to the 1800s. Each one represents a layer of the city’s history, and each restoration is an opportunity to connect past and present in a meaningful way. Preservation is about more than saving buildings. It’s about creating spaces where history is lived, shared, and experienced every day. This recognition helps us continue that work, and we’re thankful to be part of a community that values protecting the stories that shape San Antonio.

In Texas, I found more than land, my hubby, and my life. I found a sky wide enough to hold my past and my becoming. I arrived with an accent (I still have it), and a suitcase full of memories, and hope stitched carefully into every seam. Texas did not ask me to silence my story— It asked me to write another chapter, and I’m still writing it! The wind here whispers one of my reasons for leaving my native land: freedom! The highways stretch like promises. From the bright lights of Dallas to the steady heartbeat of Houston, to my beautiful North Texas. I saw something familiar— people building, striving, believing. In small towns in our County where flags wave proudly, in churches where hands reach out without hesitation, in uniforms honored and neighbors remembered, like the Texoma Hero, I felt a sense of belonging grow quietly in my chest. Texas is bold. Texas is stubborn. Texas is generous in a way that feels like home. Here, my hard work is not invisible. Here, my dreams are not too large. Here, my children can stand taller than I ever could. I love Texas because it did not erase where I came from— It gave me room to stand beside it. I love Texas because in its vast and fearless heart, an immigrant found not just opportunity— but dignity. And under this #Texas endless sky, I am no longer only from somewhere else. I am from here, too. 🤍 I love you Texas; happy Independence Day! Melida Ailshire ❤️🤍💙 #TexasIndependenceDay
