Congratulations to Cassidy Fleger, outgoing president of @texaswvc, for being chosen as this year's recipient of the Bobby Drew Abercrombie and Matthew Emmitt Abercrombie Memorial Endowed Scholarship! 🏐 This scholarship is awarded to Sport Club athletes who hold leadership positions within their club. Over four years of playing club volleyball and two years as club president, Cassidy met the demands of leading two teams by developing skills in communication and problem-solving, all the while balancing her academic and extracurricular responsibilities. Learn more about Cassidy and her journey with @texaswvc in our latest blog post at the link in bio. 🔗 A volleyball player wearing a burnt orange jersey with the number 1 prepares to hit a volleyball overhead. Same time next year ??? No jk im graduating fr, but I think this post is long overdue lol. Summarizing 15+ years of my life into an Instagram caption was hard, I’m not sure if this does it any justice and it’s probably wayy too long lol. I grew up in a gym watching my sister play and the sport has been a part of my life ever since. I played CYO and YMCA,(which I definitely took too seriously even back then🙃) on to playing through high school and college, so thinking about the sport no longer being a constant in my life is hard to comprehend. I had always dreamed of playing in college, but wasn’t ever sure if that was possible. COVID cut my junior year of club short and I felt like I lost my chance. I switched clubs my senior year, missed tryouts, and was told the only spot open was middle, which I hadn’t played in years. I got recruited as a middle, but my only offers were from a D1 JUCO in the middle of nowhere and a D3 JUCO in Mesquite. I signed to play at Eastfield JUCO, a small school outside of Dallas that I had never even heard of. My freshman year was…interesting. If I had to sum it up in three words it would be: expect the unexpected. There was a stolen (and returned) school bus, airborne clipboards, and wayy too many hours spent at a Panera. IYKYK. I made the decision to transfer schools and to say things got hard would be a severe understatement. As some of you may know, my little sister Sloane was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer at the end of my freshman year. I transferred to UTD to continue playing volleyball and my parents temporarily moved to Houston so my sister could get treated at MD Anderson. We were fortunate to have the best doctors working around the clock to treat her, but it’s something a 9 year old should never have to go through. This year was really hard for everyone. I felt like everything was out of my control and like there was nothing I could do to help. I started to hate the sport I grew up loving, dreaded practice, and was angry at myself for even complaining when my sister was undergoing severe amounts of radiation and chemotherapy. After months of treatment, she was able to come back home and heal. Cont. in comments
