The beauty of buying something directly from the hands that made it.

Some purchases feel different. Not because of the price or the product, but because of the person behind it.

At CHHAAP Sabarmati riverfront an initiative by @nift.gandhinagar I came to buy handloom and handicrafts directly from the artisans who make them.

My first stop was black pottery from Manipur. A. S. Wungmareo Khaiyar, a potter from Ukhrul, showed me a craft rooted in Tangkhul Naga tradition. I brought home a pot shaped entirely by hand.

Then I met Padma Shri Lavjibhai Parmar, a Tangaliya weaver from Surendranagar. His centuries-old craft transforms tiny woven dots into beautiful patterns. I chose a blue cloth with white motifs, feeling I was taking home something much older than the cloth itself.

One story led to another, and soon my bags were full.

I never bargained. When you stand before someone who has devoted a lifetime to a craft, you stop haggling and start thanking. The price carries years of patience, skill and generations of knowledge.

I even came home with a craft passport, stamped for the regions I bought from. Looking through it felt like revisiting an evening made of people, stories and traditions.

To me, Make in India is also about the loom in Surendranagar and the fire in Ukhrul. About choosing to support the hands that keep our crafts alive.

I went to shop. I came home with more than I could carry, a passport full of stamps and a heart full of gratitude. 🤎
