The Constance Howard Gallery and Goldsmiths Textile Collection

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Interweaving: Textiles Between Britain and the Balkans is an exhibition curated by bunar, an artistic and curatorial initiative co-founded by Arbër Qerka-Gashi (@balkanism__) and Jelena Sofronijevic (@empirelinespodcast).

The exhibition invites audiences to consider the significant and interconnected roles that clothing, fabric and textiles play in the formation, expression and cultivation of identity among Balkan diaspora communities in Britain. Across the Balkans, textiles and material culture have long occupied an important place in both everyday and ceremonial life, reflecting local environments, traditions and practices while bearing the imprint of centuries of indigenous, regional and imperial influences.

Carried across borders and generations, material culture often sustains connections to people, places and cultural practices while also providing ways of negotiating identity in the context of migration and displacement. Interweaving explores these material relationships across time and geographies, bringing Britain and the Balkans into dialogue through the fabrics, garments, contemporary art, archives, memories and practices that connect them.

Drawing on the Goldsmiths Textile Collection, bunar’s archive, contemporary artistic practices, and the voices of British Balkan diaspora communities, the exhibition opens up an ongoing conversation about the relationships diaspora communities forge with, and through, material culture.

With: Albert Kahn Archive, Ante Babaja, Diane Waller, Dušan Makavejev, Jagoda Buić, Jane Page, Janet Anderson, Janis Jefferies, Jasmina Cibic (@cibicjasmina), Judith Raum, Mary Edith Durham, Wanda Mills, Unrecorded Textile Makers and Workers.

Working collaboratively with Counterpoints Arts (@counterpointsarts).

The exhibition will be open to the public between 1-4pm all weekdays from the 9th of November. We have limited capacity for the private view, but if you’d like to attend please enquire within by sending Balkanism a DM. Please note that the exhibition will be closed during the festive period in late December/early January.

Harsheen Kaur’s exhibition Play: Subversion and Emotional (De-Colonial) Refuge opened at the Constance Howard Gallery last night. It explores the relationship between British and Indian designs which emerged during the British Raj when the use of local materials and crafts people were exploited to create European furniture forms.

The central object is a dinning table charpoy hybrid made using Victorian lace techniques. A charpoy for those who don’t know is a multipurpose furniture for sleep, leisure, entertainment and meals in a South Asian home weaved in the past with natural fibre materials like coir (coconut husk fiber), jute, hemp, and moonj (a wild grass) and modern materials using cotton or nylon.

In one section of the exhibition space a video plays on loop showing modern makers at work, and recounts nostalgic memories of the many functionalities of a charpoy from those who came to Britain.

The charpoy isn’t a distant object from the past, it’s very much used in parts of South Asia to this day including in my family home (last picture). However the thing which struck me as most interesting is the notion that before the arrival of British colonial powers, the human body took as much time to relax as it did to create productive labour for the empire. That while the home was a space divided by many rooms, it did not require many items of furniture to function properly. Often I wonder if a modern home with so many things, clutters the mind and creative energy. Or our regimented ways of organising ‘time off’ leaves the human body fatigued. That the generations who came before us created art so freely and used it in everyday life with such ease. Was it the lack of material goods weighing them down, or was it that rest was such an integral part of everyday life or that they created beauty everyday of their lives through the textiles, pottery or the furniture like a charpoy?

Rest is something I think about deeply because it’s something I struggle with myself. So the exhibition brought up many feelings for me.

You can go view the exhibition and see what kind of feelings stir up in the realms of rest, play or British Indian designs for you.

As I approach the end of my time at Goldsmiths, first as an MFA Curating student and then as a Junior Fellow, I’ve been reflecting on what an incredible five years it has been.

2021–2026! It’s impossible to fit everything here, but Goldsmiths has given me lifelong friendships, an ever-expanding network of alumni and practitioners, countless conversations that have shaped how I think and work, the love of my life, and what feels like our lifelong project @everymouthneeds ❤️

It feels strange to think that the person who arrived on their first day wearing a dress in the pouring rain in Margate, freshly moved to London and generally making a glorious mess of things, would end up here: living in Peckham with their wife, surrounded by such a brilliant community.

A huge thank you to everyone who keeps this course going despite the increasingly difficult realities of higher education, and especially @la__colin , @irene_revell , @fpclinton , @helmut_recko, @kirstyogg, @andrew.renton & Chris Hammond.

Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to be part of exhibitions, programmes, reading groups, audits, a pond, an allotment, visiting talks, alumni interviews, and three wonderful cohorts of students, alongside fellow Junior Fellows @priscillalylo, @stephaniecck, @susanalopezorozco_ @juliapolo_ and @chrl.ttclrk . The photos here mark just some of those moments :-)

Goodbye for now. I’ll still be around, but it feels important to mark this chapter as it comes to a close.

And if anyone has any exciting opportunities, collaborations or PhD advice, I’d love to chat!!

Thank you to everyone who helped me get here ❤️ especially @flemboyant_flemingo

Goodbye hugs with wonderful colleague @juliapolo_

the privilege of working together as students on placement at @formaartsmedia and then to go on to work together on the course @priscillalylo

The wonderful experience of sitting in on talks with Incredible guest speakers including @taey.iohe @pro_numb @billytanng @harunishere

running around the country with wonderful students meeting with different art spaces and alum friends, countless thankyous @ikongallery @turnerprizeofficial @hepworthwakefield @arcadiamissa @richardsaltoung

At Goldsmiths Textile Collextion today @textilesgold

Some of these textiles were donated to RICAMI by the wonderful Ruby, curator of the collection, after completing their own journeys through earlier projects. Soon they’ll begin another one.

Over the coming months they’ll be stitched, embroidered and transformed into a collective banner made by mothers and babies across East London.

I love the idea that community projects aren’t built from nothing. They’re built from knowledge generously shared, collections opened to others and people who quietly believe in what you’re trying to create.

Thank you, Ruby, for your generosity, your enthusiasm and for reminding me that textile collections aren’t simply places where objects are preserved: they can also become places where new stories begin.

Goldsmiths’ Visual Cultures students are proud launch their degree show exhibition ‘Ravelling: Practices of Hope’ and associated publication ‘In The Meantime’.

📆Thursday 18th June, 17:00-19:00.
📍Goldsmiths’ Campus, the gazebo outside Richard Hoggart Building.

Ravelling: an exhibition and public events programme responding to the polycrisis and recently adapted to address the ongoing lockout at Goldsmiths. We invite visitors to learn from and participate in personal and communal acts of meaning-making and survival in the face of multiple crises.

In our current moment we are facing compounding crises: ecological, social, mental and indeed educational! These can make us feel as though the world is unravelling... To face this we present Ravelling, an attempt to recount and enact practices of hope by bringing past and present ideas together.

The exhibition draws from archives including May Day Rooms, Bishopsgate, and the Constance Howard Textile Collection addressing histories of collaboration, street occupation, housing struggle and ecological activism. A programme of events brings these archives to life, inviting people to take part in textile production, film screenings and workshops.

In the Meantime: We approach crisis as accumulated, fragmented and ongoing. Responding to the idea of polycrisis this publication brings multiple voices, visual languages and perspectives together. Collage, layering, archival imagery, and zine-inspired aesthetics run throughout, mirroring the density and overlap of contemporary instability.
Contributors explore colonial histories, environmental precarity, technological acceleration, labour, memory, and emotional exhaustion as realities entangled to shape everyday life.
Living within crisis while still finding ways to adapt, resist, create, and think, this publication is produced through collective practice to stay critically engaged.

PLEASE COME! READ, LOOK, LISTEN, PARTICIPATE!

If you miss the launch, the exhibition is also running 19-22 June, 13:00-18:00. If you would like to ask us about accessibility provisions/ arrangements for this event, please do dm us.

Our Archive team engaged in the process of sourcing materials from the incredible archive @textilesgold for the forthcoming “Ravelling” exhibition. During this phase, we are undertaking a detailed scanning of a significant “Kantha” quilt.

This particular quilt, notable for its substantial size, features traditional Kantha stitching prominently along its edges. Recognizing the value and intricate detail of these traditional elements, and to ensure their comprehensive representation, we have developed a curatorial strategy to present these edges as distinct fragments within our work. This approach represents an exploration through the scanning of textile artefacts.

The “Ravelling” exhibition aims to engage visitors with “practices of hope,” defined as personal and communal acts of meaning-making and survival. Within this framework, quilting serves as a central metaphor and motif, symbolizing the convergence of individual contributions into a collective expression of trust. The exhibition will further explore these themes through a curated selection of archival pieces and an accompanying programme of workshops and screenings.

Goldsmiths’ Visual Cultures students are proud to present Ravelling: Practices of Hope, an exhibition and public events programme from Goldsmiths’ Visual Cultures students, responding to the polycrisis and recently adapted to address the ongoing lockout at Goldsmiths.

June 18th evening and 19th-22nd June, 1pm-6pm.
Goldsmiths, Richard Hoggart Building, Room 304.

Ravelling: Practices of Hope invites visitors to learn from and participate in personal and communal acts of meaning-making and survival in the face of multiple crises.

In our current moment we are facing compounding crises: ecological, social, mental and indeed educational! These can make us feel as though the world is unravelling…To face this we present Ravelling, an attempt to recount and enact practices of hope by bringing past and present ideas together.

There are also originally authored pieces from within the group of students.

Hope is not posited here as naive or uncritical, and it is not a given, but is defined and debated through collaborative actions and experiments.

Inspired by collaborative histories like that of the AIDS quilt, the centrepiece of the project is a collaborative evolving ‘polycrisis’ quilt inviting people to inscribe their modes of care and survival through textiles production and conversation. Quilting is used as metaphor and motif in the exhibition uniting individuals and their contributions into a collective response to the present.

Please come and join us as we honour the past and reimagine the future!

If you would like to ask us about accessibility provisions/arrangements, please do dm us.

(Events programme timings TBC very soon!)
