Welcome back to DAI One: Our Introduction to Disruption". This week, I led us in a lesson on Biblical contradictions drawing on lessons from my book: "Question Your Answers".

DAI One is our new members class and runs for 10-weeks at a time, twice a year. Some of our members enjoy it so much, they attend multiple times.

Not voting is still a political act. It just hands your voice to someone else.

Jesus never cast a ballot, but he read from Isaiah in Luke 4 and said he came to bring good news to the poor and freedom to the oppressed. That's a platform.

In Matthew 25, the test of faithfulness is whether people were fed, clothed, and visited. That's policy.

Voting isn't the entire answer. It never was. It's one tool among many for loving your neighbor as yourself at scale.

Organizing, showing up, and feeding people matter too. Faith that only lives in your head costs you nothing.

Conversion therapy promised that queer people could be changed.

When that promise failed, the theology shifted.

Jackie Hill Perry has publicly argued that God is not calling gay people to become straight, but to practice holiness and self-control even when same-sex attraction remains.

That is an important shift in language.

But for many queer people, the lived demand can still sound familiar:

Your attraction may remain.
Your desire may remain.
But you are still expected to deny it indefinitely.

The Bible makes a lot of claims.

One claim it does not plainly make is: “I am the Word of God.”

That phrase gets repeated so often in Christian spaces that many people assume the Bible uses it about itself.

But in scripture, “the word of God” can refer to divine speech, prophetic proclamation, the message being preached, and in John’s Gospel, the Logos embodied in Jesus.

That is different from saying the entire biblical canon identifies itself as “the Word of God.”

That distinction matters.

Because once we confuse God with the book, questioning an interpretation starts to feel like questioning God.

And those are not the same thing.

For some white evangelicals, having a Black teacher they already trusted created a way to engage conversations about race without having to leave the theological framework they were already comfortable with.

And that raises a harder question:

When Black voices enter predominantly white religious spaces, are they being heard because those spaces are ready to change?

Church kids gone church, deconstructing or not.

Can I get a witness?

For those thinking, “I can’t believe he said that at church”: I wasn’t at a church.

Most church leaders keep me at arm’s length, even when they agree with me, because my platform isn’t considered respectable.

I was at The Revival in Atlanta, hosted by @thejasminesgarden. The full replay is available on her YouTube channel.

I tailor my approach to the platform, and I am authentically myself everywhere I go. Some spaces are comfortable with a spicier approach than others. The Revival was full of former and current church kids, spiritualists, occultists, agnostics, and atheists.

I wouldn’t tell the story this way at your local Missionary Baptist church. They likely wouldn’t invite me to speak anyway. That’s okay. When the Black church decided to keep me at arm’s length, I decided to go where I am celebrated, not just tolerated.

I will always represent the Black Church, whether she embraces me or not. Shoutout to the handful of pastors who have had the courage to host me in their pulpits over the past few years, despite the pushback you received from your peers.

You do not have to be a political expert to participate.

But you do have a responsibility to pay attention, ask questions, check the information you are being given, and make an informed choice.

Democracy works better when people participate in it.

So read.
Research.
Ask better questions.

And vote.

If Jesus could vote, the more interesting question isn’t which party he would choose.

It’s who would his politics protect?

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus consistently turns our attention toward the poor, the sick, the captive, the oppressed, the stranger, and the people pushed to the margins.

So when Christians enter the voting booth, the question cannot only be:

“Which candidate do I like?”

If we claim to follow Jesus, then “the least of these” should matter when we make political decisions too.

Happy Hoodoo Heritage Month!

The newest episode of Holy Smokes is digging into the relationship between Black Christianity, Hoodoo, ancestral practices, folk spirituality, and the traditions our people carried with them even when they were told those traditions were demonic.

The lines between “church” and “conjure” may be a lot blurrier than we were taught.
